Aftermarket Cruise Control

my 2000 Ranger diddnt come with cruise control. someone added this one... but it's not working. I was told when they put power to it it fried. I'm wondering what kind this thing is and see if I can find a manual for it. I'd like to see if I can repair it. Or replace the parts that are fried out.. This is what the controller looks like.

any Ideas on who made this thing? and if I can get info on it?

It's probably cheaper to just buy another one. You'd have to diagnose the one you have and figure out what's wrong, then see if you can find parts. And it's probably a solid-state unit that you just have to replace anyway.

They are not particularly difficult to install. I put one on a mid 80s Z-28.

If you want to pursue yours, check the actual module under the hood, it should have the brand name on it.

Good luck.

My bimmer has never had a working cruise control. I might have to look into an after-market unit.

That looks like a JCWhitney special. It would be best to just get another one...

I agree with the majority--forget repairing and just replace the entire thing.

FoMoCo unit

Check the wiring at the MFS on the left side of the column and see if the wiring for the CC unit is there. If so you should be able to install the OEM unit.

If yours is pre wired you can follow this writeup. My 2002 Ranger was and I installed a setup from a wrecked truck.

There are two basic aftermarket cruise controls: vacuum powered and electric powered. I think there's only one company making the electric ones unless you get super expensive models but a number of vacuum powered ones. Is yours electric or vacuum?

Off topic.... Maybe.....

In 1968 I was doing some part time fluidics research with a company that built auto air conditioners. There was a guy in the shop who was always working on his own projects during company time and one day the Boss asked him if he ever intended to do any company work.

"As soon as I finish this thing", was his reply. The 'thing' was the first version of an aftermarket cruise control. It really worked, and he mounted the controls on the turn signal stalk. He said later that figuring out how to mount the switches was the hardest part.

The company got the Patent on it and they sold tons of them. As a present they gave the inventor a van with a machine shop built into it, so he quit and went into the business of making parts for drag racers. With the portable shop he could make them right there at the track.

He didn't really know if the 'thing' would sell. He was just tired of holding his foot down on his old car.

Varying lengths of broomstick handles, wedged between the front of the seat and the accelerator should do the trick. Just cut them in 5mph increments.
