anyone familiar with Hamachi as a VPN

I'd like to set up Hamachi for remote access to an application on an office server. A provider wants $10/mo whereas I thought it's something you download, install and use like any old application. Is it complicated enough to warrant $120/yr?

This is for one person to remotely access one application. This person has no reason to access other applications or data on the server but I'm not looking to actively prevent unauthorized access.

Thanks,
Sixto

Hamachi is decent, but you can also set up a PPTP VPN (included with Windows SBS, many Linux distributions, and a lot of routers) or OpenVPN (free). Neither of which cost $120/yr and rely on outside servers. PPTP is also nice because client software for it is included in basically all modern operating systems, including mobile ones. If someone loses their laptop on the road, or it breaks, you can easily walk them through VPN'ing on another device.

OpenVPN is the most secure of the three. Hamachi has its uses, but I mainly use it if I don't have access to a routable outside IP (static or dynamic, doesn't matter, since dynamic can use DynDNS).

NeoRouter is also free. It supports a wide variety of platforms as well:
NeoRouter - the network revolves around you™

You have to run the server locally, then you can have other computers join in the VPN.

It has a web client as well as browser plugin too. Also some support for mobile platforms.

Evidently you can even install it on certain compatible routers.
