Talking New Mercedes Owner

Hi everyone, I am a new 17 year old car enthusiast. I have saved enough to get my first car, a 1988 300SEL Benz. Its white in color with bluish-gray interrior. It has 169,000 miles on it. I would like to keep in touch with fellow Benz owners of the same model.

I would also like to learn more about this car. And also hear other peoples' thoughts on this model car. What is the difference between an 1989,1990,1991, etc 300SEL's and the 1988.

Thanks...

Snibble

Let me be the first to welcome you to the best Mercedes site on the Net.

You'll find literally tons of information on your car here. If you have any specific mechanical questions, I would suggest trying a search first off, chances are most of the problems you might encounter have been dealt with on several occassions. You will find a great group of people here from the World over, who all share the MB experience.

The W126's are some classy looking cars.

Let me be the second to wish you a warm welcome.

My first MB was a C200 W202. Now, the daily driver is a 126 300SE which I have absolutely no regrets in its purchase.

The 126 is truly a classic pedigree.

Welcome.

You have definately found one of the best places ont he net for Mercedes cars, information, community, and technical help.

The search feature is a great wayt o find information in the archives.

You wont see too many people getting out of line here, everything tends to be more civil.

Again, Welcome to Mercedesshop, and be sure to check out the partsshop, and fastlane when you need parts, they have some great prices here.

Alon

Hello Snibble,

Congratulation on your first Benz.
I took me 47 years to purchase my first Mercedes and I'm from Stuttgart-Germany, but within six months I bought the second one.
We have a lot of great people on this web-side and their always willing to help.

Good luck and drive safely

Gunter

The good thing about this site is the wealth of expertise and humour. The other thing would be the addiction that comes with it. As they say, you can check out but can never leave.

Good day.

Thank you all, I am a glad I have found this site. You all sound very nice and helpful. I will keep you all updated on my car. I will take pictures of it later and share them with you all.

Untill then, can someone show me links to any websites that tells you more info on 1988 300sel? I tried searching through the archives on this forum and hadn't had much luck. I would appreciate any input I get.

Snibble, welcome aboard! You're going to love this site. It really is a special place. I am always pleasantly surprised on how willing members are to help each other out.

I've also noticed you're not the only young person to buy a MB as your first car, especially a W126 body style! Excellent!

You can go crazy using the search function on this site. Just know that you have a W126 body style and an M103 engine. Members frequently use the numbers instead of "300 SEL" or "3.0 liter SOHC in-line engine".

Have fun!

Wink Welcome aboard!!!

My teenage daughter's first car is a 1989 300TE with 147K miles. She says that driving the 300TE makes her a better driver because she can't see herself taking such a nice/cool car and thrashing it or abusing it.

But then again, girls make better drivers

Oh boy, watch the fur fly on this one

Good luck with your "new" car. You are definitely a person of good taste. Enjoy it and welcome to the club!

Hey,

I'm a 20 year-old 380SE driver (short wheelbase W126, not as much rear legroom as your 300SEL has). Enjoy your car and treat it with all the respect it deserves. I hope your ownership experience will be as pleasant as driving my car has been for me (and enjoy that rev-happy I-6).

-Sam

PS: My ex-girlfriend (who I am still friends with) is a very smooth and focused driver who isn't afraid to keep up with the flow of traffic and drives defensively.

However, a very good female friend of mine is the proverbial female cell-phone-yakking, makeup-applying, multitasking female driver that many of us have encountered on the road. And she has a beer-can of a 1996 Nissan Sentra (automatic of course for someone like her). Hopefully, she'll never test the body rigidity of that tiny car with an accident bred of stupidity.....
