salvage title

I have my big dodge for sale (yes, here and other places).

I have a fellow interested near here who has a 96 dodge he wants to trade in on it. It sounds like a decent truck but he says it has a salvage title. He says it was rear ended and needed a new bed and rear end but did no frame damage. (I'm trying to imagine how you could ruin a rear end in a crash and do no frame damage).

How would the salvage title affect the value? Will a bank lend on one?

Bank will not do a loan if the vehicle is collateral. You will not be able to insure it other than the state minimum and in some states, only after a reconstruction inspection.

Value will be less than with a clean title. The truck is old enough that banks probably aren't going to want to lend on it anyway. I had no trouble insuring my '71 with its rebuilt title. If you can get it for cheap enough it might be a good deal.

hmm buddy of mine has an 03 jetta he bought with a salvage title.and he fixed it himself.he has full coverage on it.BUT they have it listed as a diminished value.so if it is totaled he won't get full price for it.anyway as for the dodge if the box and rear end had damage you can bet the frame did too.

If you still need a diesel PU, keep the one you have. It's one of the best PU's ever made by anyone. While the '96 will have the simpler engine (that BTW develops just 1/2 the power of your '03), the chassis falls far short in the brakes and suspension department. I have had both, and wouldn't trade the '03 even for a brand new truck.

In my Dad's years after retirement he bought lots of wrecked cars, put them right and sold them. Many of them with a salvage title. He got quite frustrated at how these cars were BRANDED and sometimes were hard to sell.

He made them right again, but the fact that they were salvage titles often made them difficult to sell. Someone would be really interested, but then when they started talking to a banker or insurance person, would cool off real quick.

Just examine the repair work closely and factor in that it may very well be extremely difficult to sell. If you can find a willing buyer it might not effect the price alot, but be prepared to take a hit when you're going in.

Best of luck with it.

I'd imagine you could still carry any level of liability insurance you like. Collision/comp may be a problem, but those are suckers' bets anyway.

Insurance laws vary by state, so there's no single answer.

When did collision/comprehensive insurance become a suckers bet???

My comp insurance paid when I hit a deer. More than I paid for the car.

exactly.comp is well worth the extra 10 bucks a month or so.100 deduct.pretty much anything that happens to a vehicle is gonna cost that much.and it won't affect your rates.

My old 86 Toyota was rearended by a drunk going 60. Had to replace the whole bed, but the frame was not torqued at all. I would think it's quite possible on a full sized PU that the frame is fine.

At lunch today my buddy said if the truck retailed for $7200 I should only pay about $4000 with a salvage title.

He concurs that the bank will not loan on it. (that does not matter to me but if I want to sell it it may matter to a future buyer).

Tom,

To share again what my Dad seemed to have learned; if you can find someone who needs a truck, it's in good shape and the buyer is paying cash, then you could sell it below normal market value. The buyer would get a good deal, again if everything was put back right again.

If the book says $7,200 for a truck with good title, I think $4,000 puts you in the ballpark. This gives you enough margin to take extra time to sell it, find a buyer that realizes the situation and understands how this might be a bargain, and still leave you a little room to make a few bucks for messing with it.

Again, best of luck with it and keep us posted.
