All of my balancing tools are engraved or laser marked.

The engraving is done by the vertical mill and is quite costly. The laser mark is quick and cheap.

In the old days, metal stamps would be utilized on softer materials. The extensive use of nitriding today generally rules that out. And, it looks cheap.

I know of two places that still utilize the old pantograph engravers for plastic signs and such. I also know of a few craftsmen that still engrave metal by hand.

What have you got in mind?

My laser mark vendor can easily do that. He makes brass plates for me all the time.

It's about $10. for a small plate (2" x 4").

He doesn't really charge by the word. It's pretty much a flat charge by the setup.

If you provide a .cdr file with everything you want on the tag, it's much faster.

A cookie for anyone else who knows - without looking it up - what a .cdr file is.

That's one of my favorite pieces of software.

Brass would probably look better and do better as an acid etch followed with an aging bath, but the cost is higher for that than what BC is talking about

Yes, most sign programs are based on CorelDraw or Illustrator.

I've used CorelDraw in the past, but wasn't impressed. Bear in mind I started off using AutoCad R12 in college, and an earlier version while in high school.

I've also used CATIA in the past.

For what I do now, AutoCad is perfect. Most of the work we do is in the 2D format, basic X-Y cords...which is where AC is stronger and easier to use.

I would not willingly use CorelDraw to do the sort of work that I would normally do with CAD software.

I have no experience with the programs. I should have been a little more clear, the RR recently put down over a mile of track, with the new track we'd like the ability of offering to put a plaque down in honor of the Veteran or active duty service member, they'd be affixed to the tie, and depending on the level they want they'd also receive a plaque with a copy of the plate, The GPS coordinate of the plate and a picture and possibly a movie of the dedication of the section once one area gets filled
