I'm Impressed........

I just saw a flat bed wrecker with a Kia on it. Everything was completely smashed, the front and back. What impressed me was that front and rear seating area was intact. KIA must build a pretty safe car.

Wow!

Makes you want to go run right down to the Kia dealer and buy a brand new one, doesn't it?

...and then go out and screech the tires a few times in tribute to the safety and ingenuity of the Koreans.

But the trouble is, when you finally brought it home, all the neighbors would wonder if you had just BOUGHT a NEW car, or RENTED one.

It was just an observation....

I'd imagine most new cars these days are pretty safe for the passengers. Front and rear crumple zones really to their job protecting the occupants.

These days the cars take the brunt of the impact, "back in the day" it was the occupants.

Except for the so-called "Smart " car. Not enough space for crumple zones so the deceleration on the occupants is very high.

Mercedes does not enforce a great many of their safety-related patents--much to their credit.

Yes, I've never considered the Smart car very smart for highway use. They first came out when I was doing extensive European travel. In the crowded European cities with narrow streets they made a lot of sense. On fast boulevards and especially highways, I'm surprised that they're legal.

This is indeed the broader conclusion. You'd be amazed how much safer brand new cars are in comparison to cars even 5 years ago.

Personally, I think that ANYTHING should be legal, so long as it has acceptable braking and handling. If people want to kill themselves, who's Washington to stop them?
