fox/coyote

on the way to the Y today an animal which looked to be fox size but had heavier body structure and a yellowishbrownishgray fur ran across the road about 30' in front of me.

He was running all out with his ears laid back. By the actions of him I assume him to be a wild animal not a dog.

I assume it must have been a smallish coyote but it even looked too husky for one of them.

Sure sounds like a coyote. We see then around here every now an then. Maybe it was a well fed one with a belly full of neighborhood cats?

or dogs.

One time while out picking blueberries my dogs were in the underbrush and all of a sudden went to raising all kinds of heck and running out chased by a coyote. Both of the dogs were a little bigger than the coyote but had tucked tail hauling butt out of there. I was kinda surprised that the dogs did not try to go around with it. I guess the coyote was out to kill and all the dogs wanted to do was chase tennis balls. I yelled out and shot towards the coyote and he turned tail and went the other way.

It does sound like a coyote, but as Jim said, they look just like a dog. In fact that's what they really are is a wild dog. Around here some folks call them coyotes, some folks call them wolves.

I THINK if it had been a Fox you would have been able to tell more by the way it ran. A Fox really goes fast with almost invisible leg movement when in a dead run, while a coyote runs like a dog. Kind of hard to describe the difference. Also the bushy tail of a Fox gives it away.

We have gone through periods around here where we are REALLY covered up with coyotes. Right now they're sort of in the middle of a down swing. I hear them often an hour or two before Sunrise when they are yelping for others to join back up and head to their den area for the day.

When you hear them they really fool you about their location. It sounds like they're 100 feet away, but they are actually much farther.

The old wives tale is that if you kill one and hang it over the fence it will keep them away, but I've never seen much evidence of that. When I've seen them hung over the fence, it still seems that I hear just as many in their normal locations.

My Shiba Inu looks like a fox... but I doubt you'd see one running wild.

my mother some years back had an issue where a coyote made an attempt at attacking her english bulldog, with hilarious results.

It always amazes me just how dense a bulldog is, and for a small animal, it was nearly 60lbs of muscle and mass, and outweighed the coyote by a huge amount, though physically smaller looking.

The problem was that bulldogs aren't fast as you can imagine, and initially her dog ran, but when cornered, turned and became horrendously vicious looking and aggressive with a giant mouth, which made the coyote think twice and take off with a snapping red eyed beast chasing it as best it could.

Ive seen that same dog knock down far larger golden retrievers and such at dog parks in pursuit of tennis balls. I guess it pays to weigh and move like 3 bowling balls right next to the ground. Center of gravity seems to be a big advantage in some of these dog fights

isnt a fox closer to a cat in origin? sure seems cat like the way they run

Great story Drop! I wish you had it on video!

Yes, I think a Fox is indeed a Feline, but I would have to check.

Edit: Woops! A quick google shows a Fox to be a canine. I stand corrected.

Family Canidae. Not feline.

A fellow who lives nearby was recently bitten by a fox. He killed it and it tested positive for rabies. He is undergoing treatment. We've had a number of rabid fox cases over the last few years.

no pics of it unfortunately, it died a couple years ago. It did indeed have a face that only a mother could love. Certainly unlike Compu_85's beautiful Shiba.
I did love that dog though, as loyal and concerned about its master as any dog ever.

Drop,

Those English Bulldogs are just one of these critters that is so ugly it's cute. The pups around here go for something like $1500. That can't be an accident. They must be really good pets or they wouldn't have such demand.

I've only been around them casually, but they seem to be extremely calm and easy to get along with.

A few years ago, my wife and I saw one sitting in the front seat of a Volkswagen that was parked. It just sat there extremely calm, almost like a statue. Even while we were close to the window gawking at it, the dog just calmly turned its head to look at us. Not many dogs with a disposition like that.

OH YEAH! Agreed!!! (For once!)

Back when down in Arizona, in the desert area on the far east side ot Tuscon, around twilight or just after dark, you could hear the mournful cries of the coyotes.

One time one ran right in front of my Crown Vic, too, in a residential area, and it was much like Tom and others described.

Another time out there, I saw what looked like a rattlesnake crossing the road.

(In Arizona, the rules are different for that. I tried to run it over with the Vic.)
