New invention for auto side mirror
Exclusive First Video: A Sideview Mirror Without Blind Spots | This Could Be Big - Yahoo! News
Not an especially sexy topic but this guy, a math professor, came up with a mirror that reduces blind spot with much less distortion than a fish eye lens. |

I like the idea in the video link, where distortion is mostly at the top, not the middle and lower range of the mirror. I really love the aspheric mirrors from Europe that I retrofitted on the C280 . . . changing lanes with a higher degree of confidence is great. I priced some for the GLK350 . . . but I may have to wait a bit. |
from what i see it's like the pass side mirrors that make things look smaller or "objects in the mirror are closer then they appear.

Sounds awesome, love to see how this looks. Though I get along just fine with a few little convex sticky mirrors in the corner of my side views

Those are way better than nothing. These might be better, hard to say. They mentioned after-market might be their surest bet. I might wait to see more revues but I'd be inclined to try them, if they aren't unGodly expensive anyway.

The newer MB's have part of the mirror as wide-angle, part is just flat lens. Somewhat similar to the non-distorting wide-angle mirror except that the one in this video is mostly wide-angle where the MB unit is mostly flat.
But I wonder how much significant improvement this one has over the traditional convex lens mirrors found commonly in our cars today, to be of such value. I don't have a problem with convex lenses, in fact I have a wide-angle mirror in my cars for better visibility. I hardly ever need to look at the far side mirror because of this, but I still glance at them for obvious reasons. |
Hard to say w/o trying them. I suspect I'll try them, if reviews are good anyway. One hopes they aren't priced too steep.

Neat idea!
But 200 people backed over each year by cars? 198 of them probably needed to be taken out of the gene pool anyway. No mirror is going to fix the complete and total stupidity of walking behind an idling car in a parking lot when the back-up and brake lights are on. I swear it happens almost every time I go to the grocery. Zero situational awareness. Most folks just seem to have their heads up their a$$es. |
I've got convex mirrors on my bike they're great
