You be the judge

I advertised on the Miata forum for a nice clear headlight to replace my lf as it is a little faded. A fellow called and said he had a nice one. I said, send pictures. He said, "oh, I don't want to do that. I'll just send it to you and you send me a check if you like it".

It came and it is not significantly better than the one I have.

I am thinking I will just tell him to send me a check for freight and ship it back to him.

Seem fair enough?

I had great success with one of those $20 kits that you get at the Autozone. The headlights on my clk 320 looked brand new.

Unless there was additional communication that wasn't described in the opening post - and assuming that the piece really isn't wanted as it is - I'd send it back at my own expense and consider it to be a lesson learned.

maybe he doesn't care about the money. I know several of you fine folks have shipped me parts I needed for the cost of shipping. and I've returned the favor a few times. I'd be honest with him. Maybe he doesn't even care about getting the shipping money. Maybe his old lady was on his back to get rid of some of his excess car parts and sending you the light was better karma then throwing it in the trash. lol

I am not contemplating sending him the shipping cost, but will ask him to send it to me.

I just wanted pictures to assure it was better than the one I have and he decided to ship to me.

How did he have your address to just ship it to you? If you provided the address, then you seem to have shared in the transaction.

I'd send him a picture of both in my communication.

Pictures are always the way to go. I had someone who wanted money for pictures which is a sign of something odd. Someone who says no to pictures is a red flag too. I may be slow or a little late at times doing something, but NEVER would I refuse to send pictures. Is the cost of shipping, my guess around $7-8, the same as the value of the part ? Sounds like a wash but I see your point Tom. If he puts a $5 or $10 bill in an envelope then that would solve the issue. If he refuses, then I am not sure I would pay for the shipping.

I did not ask him to send it, nor agree to buy it, nor agree to pay to ship it back.

Yesterday i sent him a note saying it was not significantly better than the one I have and told him I would be happy to ship it back to him as soon as he sent me the money for the shipping. I don't have an email or phone for him but did have his address.

Dont you have COD delivery over there? That way if he doesnt want to pay the postage, he can argue with the postal service.

Well, that's different. If he just sent that out of the blue, then I wouldn't give him anything and taking your time to send it back is kind.

Maybe the guy did indeed mean that if you didn't like it, just don't worry about it. I have sent parts to people for free just asking them to pay shipping, and I've received parts that way.

If you just let him know it's not what you were looking for, he might just say throw it in the scrap pile and don't worry about it.

Although I'm considered an ********* on this forum, I've sent quite a few parts to people just to help them out. Maybe this guy is doing that and that's why he didn't bother with the picture and wouldn't think twice if you didn't pay him.
