MAN! I really hate to hear this one!

His performances are so involved in my childhood:

I remember seeing No Time for Sergeants at the theater when I was about 6 or 7. My Dad had several of his comedy routine records about the same time. One of them about Romeo & Juliet and the other about a hillbilly at a Football game.

I remember seeing the episode of The Danny Thomas Show that turned out to be the Pilot for The Andy Griffith Show. I remember watching the very first episode of The Andy Griffith Show and the family rarely missed the show after that.

TAGS was a comedy, but it also put forth a strong moral message unlike much of anything that I can think of on TV today.

The first season or two of TAGS were the very best episodes. As the years went by Andy lost more and more of the country bumpkin act that made the show so much fun.

RIP Sherriff without a Gun!

I stand corrected my good Sir. Goober died a while back. I was lucky enough to meet him at the Jacksonville Fair back in the 70's.

I guess I'm not well enough versed in the show to know who that was.

A true legend. His show is probably in the top 5 all time great shows. Most comedy, IMO, is only funny in its time. I don't know why that is, but it seems to be the case. Andy Griffith was definitely an exception to that rule. His comedy is as funny today as it was back then.

RIP.

Opie Taylor + Ritchie Cunnigham = Opie Cunnigham.

BTW is "Look at me I'm Ernest T" still living?

My first year at college was 1951. At that time "Deacon" Andy Griffith was a relatively obscure southern comedian but he had just come out with a recorded routine, "What it was, was football", that got a lot of airtime. I must have punched the B2 key on the juke box in the Student Union 50 times a week. Couldn't get enough of it. It was hilarious in its day, and even now I get a chuckle.

Thanks for the laughs.

RIP, "Deacon".

A true gentleman. He will be sorely missed.

Having also grown up in a small rural NC town, you'd be surprised how often the background setting for that show, once past the comedic situations, actually did mirror real life.

Perhaps not surprising, given Mr Griffith's home town of Mt Airy NC.

Most celebrities passing I just duly note, but this one hurts - it feels as if not just the man, but something good and decent, has passed from the world, never to be seen again.
