Used car prices?

What's the deal with used car prices these days, they seem to be all over the place. I've been looking at getting a used Honda Accord of Honda Element, and the prices are always all over the place. Some months they seem to be all going for one price, then the next they go up $3000, then the next they drop $3000! Is it a trick all the car dealers are playing on people?

Buy from a human, not a dealer parasite.
Craigslist > Cities.

A used car dealer once told me that cars are like fur coats. Some sell better in the summer and some sell better in the spring and so on.

He would sometimes 'test the waters' since he could afford to let a car sit for a month if he thought it was hot. He could not do this with every car, of course, but at income tax return time or back to school time he would take a slight risk.

Cash for clunkers took loads of good cars off the market, gone forever.

Politics aside, it's pretty hard to find a good used car for a decent price. The dealers are paying close to retail at the auctions, hoping to make their money back on the "buy here pay here" financing.

Asking prices are not actually selling prices. We've all seen the w123s and w126s on eBay where the people are asking like $50k for them, no way would they actually sell for that, maybe not even 10% of it. A lot of pricing on older cars like that is simply due to uncertainty (ignorance) of the market.

Along these lines, Americans are keeping their cars longer, which also affects used car inventory. I believe this year a record was set. Of the 245 million cars registered in the US, the average age is 11 years.

I think it's safe to say a lot of us have contributed to that number.

Do some research on where to find good cars at decent prices. There are places. I agree that too many car dealers are grasping if you examine their deals carefully. First rule to me is that they are no real deals.

Why some people pay three quarters of the original price for something say four years old is beyond me totally.
