I like J.J. Cale's version of "Cocaine" better than Clapton's.

Well, he did write it. After Midnight as well.

Clapton pretty much 'borrowed' J.J. Cale's style, lock stock and barrel for Slowhand. Never sat too well with me, but didn't seem to bother Mr. Cale, or his career much. The two of them shed some interesting perspective on it during interviews revolving around their release of Road To Escondido.

Terry Gross had a really interesting interview with Cale on Fresh Air. He was remarkably self effacing about his influence on Clapton and others. Almost shy. Seemed like a fella you could have a beer with no matter who you are.

or gal.

Just to be sure, Clapton has been public about his addiction and has spoken (and written) about his stints at Hazelden (twice iirc).

That's pretty much my impression as well. Have had the pleasure of working with him a few times.
Never did a gig with Clapton, but somehow I get the impression that he is not nearly as personable.

I really like his music and he is a really top level guitarist.

The most amazing thing about him, though, is that he is still alive. In 67 or 68 when he recorded the Cream album in the UK, he had a 3,000 British Pound per day heroine habit. HOW does anyone survive that?

Yeah, I caught that. Gross did a very good job of drawing him into what seemed to be intimate conversation more than interview.

Although Clapton has had more than a trifling affair with drugs, he still isn't in the same league with Keith....

In my estimation there are few interviewers better than her. I can't think of one off the top of my head.
