Browning Hi Power...

I just bought a new toy! I got a Belgium made Browning Hi Power!

I have to say this is a fantastic pistol. JMB was a genius in every sense of the word and I think the hi power was his best effort. Its like a 1911 that's been refined. Far simpler, and just better made.

I have shot just about every pistol out their and I keep coming back to Browning designs. They just feel right to me in my hand, and reliability as near as I can tell is perfect.

Accuracy is very good, trigger is not up to 1911 standards but I was still able to pop soda cans at 60 yards without to much trouble.

Trigger is not what I like, the sear kind of lets go whenever, weights pretty good though. I think I'm going to get a trigger job done on it. Needs a good break in though, way to tight. I'm going to put 500 rounds threw it to loosen it up.

Overall I can't imagine a much better 9mm pistol. Maybe a Sig P210 or P226? During its time it was the best you could have, it owns the Luger or P38. Not even close.

IIRC, the magazine safety has an influence on the quality of the trigger pull.

I have several 1911s, but never a HP. It's on my short list. Ditto on Browning designs.

I've had one since '85. Good shooter, reliable, trigger/mag release are the weakest points of an updated design over the 1911.

Let me know if you get a trigger job done on it and how you like the result.

I've owned one since 1971.

My current favorite is an Inglis Browning made during WW II in Canada by John Inglis for Chiang Kai Shek's army. It has an extended barrel, Chinese markings and a provision for a shoulder stock. It also has dove tail sights that adjust up to 500 feet.

I guarantee you it will make you think twice if I point it at you, especially with the 32 round magazine.

That's why I am a kind, peace-loving person.....

My Wife has one of these and thinks it is the greatest pistol she has ever owned. Hers' is a 1968 that was made in Belgium and is just about perfect in every way.

And if you need an owners manual there is one online at the Browning site. It is the one that came with the latest version but the information in it can be applied to any earlier model.

I enjoy shooting it, too, but my eyesight is not what it once was so I have to stand pretty close to the target.

It is sure easier to shoot than the old S&W Model 28 I used to own.

Some of the Belgians can't handle high pressure ammo.

Soda cans at 60 yards is pretty impressive, considering a 1911 would likely group 10 or so inches at that range, with a decent shooter. Havent tried anything like that with pistols though.

I send periodic updates to BATF. They can give me a count if you want one.
