Tell'em you like their shoes and hair. Later you tell them you like cars.

Women don't like competition, and with car guys, they have to compete against a pile of steel and rubber.

Bot's right...avert your attention to them in the beginning, then bring the car aspect in later.

They see it as "small mans syndrome" . ~ Big car > little .......
Try stuffing a pair of socs down your jeans !! Be ready for no eye contact though.
Honestly Justin, I cant understand why you would be telling them about your car interests until you have .......... a few times. If they see your car, best dismiss it a little & say its just transport. They dont want to have to compete with it for your attention.
Given that, there are some who are interested in cars ~ their car(s). Bohdi in DD is a good example of such & probably about your age !

Change it up a little...tell them you are into "paddle shifters". When they say, Huh? Tell them "like on high end MB's and Ferarri's".

Its all about the delivery.

"Car guy" is vague, and it allows the hearer to fill in whatever negative thoughts they have about "car guys".

Follow Bot's advice--show interest in HER

Later, you define what you mean by car guy. "One of my hobbies is restoring vintage Aston Martins or Mercedes Roadsters." is a lot better than "car guy".

Let them talk, look in their eyes and nod a lot. It works, I've been married three whole times.

Yes. Especially human powered boat guys. Kayakers, rafters all earn big time points. The powerboat dorks are in the same league as car guys, sadly.
Women and even girls have been wise to "car guys" since about 1975. Cars no longer symbolize masculinity to anybody but men worried about their masculinity. Wimmin' are a sight smarter than that.

Another thing to consider that may affect their response to you. "Chicks".
Really?
