And this is the mall my kids like to go to...

In our small community, and outlying areas, we feel pretty safe from murderers, abductions, and the like.

However, sometimes things like this happen...

Bear cub wanders into PIttsburgh Mills in Frazer | TribLIVE

That's where my kids like to spend time with their friends, hanging out at the food court, and shopping. It's only 6 miles from the house...

That's VERY true. Mom acts the same way a buddy of mine does with guys who want to date his daughter, shoot first, bury the body, ask no questions.

Sounds very much like me, oddly enough.

My neighbor's daughter took pictures of the cub on her cell phone, and came over a few hours ago to show us. It wasn't big at all...about the size of my boxers, which are 120 pounds for the two oldest ones.

I'm not even going to get into how I misread that sentence. Suffice to say, once I figured out that you were talking about dogs, it made a lot more sense. Not as funny, but more sense.

LMAO

It was apparently a 200 pound bear, and another, possibly it's mother, was spotted in the area shortly afterward.

Common sightings around here. At certain times of the year six or more bears will be across the road down in a field. Perhaps 1500 feet away. They never seem to come up and cross the road. This suprises me as I would have thought garbage raiding wouldhave occured. They must have adaquate feed from natural sources.

Much closer encounters are quite common out in the cottage area. Generally the bear population is growing locally. May have to do with the changing climate. Warmer and shorter winters with the summer season increasing in length weatherwise.

The local specis is the black bear and I do not remember any bad incidents being reported in the last 35 years or so we have lived here.

I think the large hybred coyotes represent a more serious risk locally. They have killed a human in this province and attacked others.

It took a long tme for me to find out that they are not really true coyotes but have a different name along the north eastern parts of the states and here. I also do not think they are native to this region.

There was a bounty on them when they first became established but that is no longer in effect. Very hard animal to shoot out of an area. They tend to be very ellusive. Close accidental encounters with one are not unusual though. Since there basically is no rabies amoungst the animal population here at least that does not increase the risk with them. Although I expect rabies to eventually get here as well.

If we're still living in this area later this year, I plan on taking my son with me on a bear hunt. I went last year with a few buddies. I didn't bag one, but the group I was with bagged 3.

I saw that. I went up the road to get a cup of coffee and ran into an East Deer TWP officer that said he saw two of them this morning on his way in.

When I lived in Colorado, a young bear (not really a cub, but not full-grown by any means) made news when it wandered down the Pearl Street mall in Boulder, eventually climbing a tree and napping. Police evacuated the area and it was later tranquilized and returned to the wilds ... presumably farther away from town.
