Re: ITALIAN Tune-Up Is A Racist Term...

The term "Italian Tune-Up" implys that Italians are so inept, stupid and dishonest, that they are only capable of tuning a high-performance car by driving it at high speeds with sudden acceleration in order to blow out the accumulated carbon in the engine."

No, it doesn't mean that at all and there's nothing racist about it. The Italians, in fact, were the first to recommend tuning up a car that way. This was back in the 50s (when I was a teenie gear-head), and the Ferraris, Aston-Martins, even Fiat drivers all recommended it as a method of tuning up. At first, nobody believed it, but the idea has gradually come to be acceptable, at least for well-engineered cars.

Wink Tune-up?

I recently did one of those blow out, throttle down events. Then I got notice of claims in the mail for numerous car washes and new paint jobs. They all said they were following me. I looked back when I did it and there was?????????????????? two Toyotas one Nissan and one Ford(With a red light in front). Guess who got the ticket.

Well. as the resident Italian citizen here, let me tell you all that I'm PROUD to have that tune-up named after my country!!

BTW, my brother's a mechanic. He used to laugh at how customers would bring their cars in because they weren't performing well. He would simply take them out on the highway and run the crap out of them, then return to the shop with a great performing car!

All ya gotta do is have some fun in your car to keep it performing well!

Question Italian tuneup a racist term?

longston! wazzup bro? haven't seen you on this forum in ages!

I would think "dago tuneup" would be insulting.

The origins of "italian tuneup" are well documented, and therefore add credibility to the term...nothing offensive or politically incorrect.

And as a dual citizen (American-Italian), I find no offense to the term...

...but fortunately, my indie just performed a "German tuneup" on my W124 last week. What a difference!

My dad borrowed my 126 the other day and came back and said that he did an italian tuneup. I got a bit pissed with him because I worry alot about my baby.

Is this actually good for the car?
For years I have referred this type of repair/diagnostic procedure as:

"...Stress testing the machine..."

Thanks to all for the ideas, keep them coming theory...

I think you should be grateful to your father for doing you such a wonderful favor. In return, you should perform Italian tune-ups on his car, lawn mower, chain saw, electric toothbrush, anything of his that has a motor. Do a thorough job, and if anything breaks, shrug your shoulders and tell him it was about to go anyway!

P.S. - In my (heavily Italian) neck of the woods, this is known as an "Irish tuneup".
Nice!

Is it bad to drive like this real often like everyday, and especially on weekends? I always average about 95 MPH when i drive to bakersfield on the weekends for 2 hrs, when theyre not doing something stupid on the road, like a sign says "expect delays", so everyone slows down and absolutely nothing is going on or "traffic jam" so everyone creates one just to prove the sign right..... Stupid californians!!!!

Car runs great, but its that damn idle stumble, and takes 2 tried to start it, sometimes 3, every once in a while. Too cheap to throw parts at it, which still ends up beign cheaper than taking to the dealer for 2 hrs diagnosis.
