Isn't the whole car R129 300SL running gear? I remember reading about these, I saw one sell a chunk under $100,000 a couple years back. $185,000 is a smidge optimistic IMO.

100k seems more possible. It looks pretty good actually. I cannot really consider it a good investment though. It really isn't even a replica with the modern running gear, just a drivable novelty.

I couldn't bring myself to click on the link. Gull Wings are too sacred to see one changed in any significant way.

I would not look at it as an investment either but looks like someone has other ideas. I would be more inclined to actually drive something like this versus the real thing. If it has a/c I think it would be a great driver.

It takes a lot to impress me with cars anymore and I recently had the opportunity to drive a 02 Dodge Ram 2500 with the Cummins engine and automatic. It impressed me a lot.

It is more of a tribute car. Nothing has been bastardized. All new.

Of course it looks like a gullwing so if that is what offends you well then ok.

Didn't Mercedes sue them for copyright infringement? I remember seeing a picture of Mercedes employees destroying fake Gullwing body's.

I love this idea, I was just talking to someone the other day who was discussing how nice it would be if auto manufacturers would occasionally take an iconic car from their past, and release it with a completely modernized drivetrain, but in the old wrapping.

He was discussing how he wanted an original willy's jeep with a modern coil suspension and fuel efficient small modern engine, basically what the original jeep had, but circa today vs the 40s. Still extremely small and nimble though.

A car like this would go admirably with my bolex.

I don't understand how this guy made this car.

Did he take a R129 300SL chassis and create new sheet metal in the form of a Gullwing? Even if he did this, he'd still have to recreate the interior / dash layout, etc.

Or did he take a real '57 Gullwing and transplant R129 300SL running gear?

I was just thinking this too. If it was a true 93 car, its missing a lot of the safety stuff that would be required to actually be drivable, but it he modern drivetrained an actual gullwing, he could have done what he's done without incident.

Maybe he went this route?

As a 93 it would need headrests at least and a collapsible steering column, which this does not appear to have. Also id love to see more pics of braking and suspension design
