Most any year. Basically within a chassis series all transmissions and engines will bolt together.

There is much information and experience to be found by searching in the diesel discussion forum.

To slightly oversimplify, if you find a 240D parts car for all the bits. The only things that will not be bolt up will be shifter rods and driveshaft. Both will need to be shortened.

Hope this helps.

I have a friend with a 300C, and I keep thinking of how much nicer that coupe would be with a turbo motor and manual tranny. But it's all wishful thinking--the body of the coupe has too much tin worm to justify the work.

Yes it will fit. This swap has been multiple times in the past with varying success. Searching in Diesel Discussion should come up with LOTS of information.

I know one person that did the swap you are contemplating and ended up with a vibration that I don't think he ever eliminated. It is member RLeo, if you want to PM him and ask his advice.

If you do this, I would recommend that you use a later version manual transmission from late 80 to the end of the series. Make sure you get the plate between the transmission and engine that matches the transmission.

The later transmission is a little stronger.

Good luck with it.

If you dumb it down and simplify the operation enough, yes. You'll need a few pieces like the flywheel, pedal assembly, etc. Best bet is to post over in the diesel section, the swap and topic have been covered well over there.

I've done a few transmission swaps and I'll make a suggestion.

You MUST have full access to the donor car, preferably within walking distance of the recipient. Don't try to go to the donor car and get everything off of it you will need. There will be small bits that you won't think of. It also helps because you can see how things came off just before you walk over to put them in.

Hope this helps.

Yes, but the plates are different from early 123 series to late.

I have everything needed for the swap. Transmission, pedals, flywheel, clutch, driveshaft that I'd sell for $400 if you want it and are close by. I don't want to have to deal with shipping.

There you go! It would be easier than hauling up and then disposing of a parts car.

Thread resurrection

So I'm assuming I can just take the entire driveline [sans subframe] from my 300D AUTO and put it in my 240 AUTO donor car? I don't know what the 240 gears are but perhaps I could just keep the diff and axles mounted up and swap motor/auto transmission/driveshafts to existing 240 diff.

Basically I've got about 3 days and want to make this as simple as possible!

Thanks!

The driveshafts will be different lengths but if you have both complete cars you will have everything you need. Rear axles and suspensions will be the same except the gear ratios could possibly be different.
