Speed cameras.
Driving around Lincoln, UK recently on the main road - a dualled carriageway section with a standard 70mph speed limit, according to the signage - I approached a speed camera at about 60mph and the passing traffic all clomped on the brakes and slowed right down to 60mph to pass the speed camera and then roared away again, once out of the road markings for it. I know the penalties aren't light, but I was confused.

Better safe than sorry. This being said, a lot of people in the UK know where the pig-cameras are and drive 80-100 mph at all other times.

The only way such cameras are effective is when they are portable and moved to different specific problem locations very frequently. THAT is my response to the deployment strategy of these things.
My response to their use in practice is that they are in most cases nothing but revenue producers. I DO believe that I would rather see tax revenue produced in a way that enhances public safety rather than just tax someone for the simple reason that they have money that can be taxed.

Same thing around here, there are signs indicating there are traffic light cameras. People tend to drive more carefully. After they're past the intersection where the lights are situated, they just roar off once again.

It got so out of hand here in Mississippi the Governor ordered then banned. Photo Enforcement Banned in Mississippi It just became a huge revenue stream for every city.

The original intent was for safety, but then municipalities discovered how much money they can produce, so now they pop up like weeds all over the place. I really dislike big brother always watching. But I do agree with the red light cams - those are OK.

Speed (as opposed to light) cameras are fortunately banned in NY and NJ. There are occasional attempts to permit them, but so far the legislatures aren't too interested in doing so.

I haven't seen much running of red lights in GB, people seem to stop at a red light, even in the middle of the night when there is no traffic about.

Red-light infractions in these parts will run you $75 a pop!
