Stolen Benzes recovered...

Interesting story...
Last week thieves went to the MB dealer about thirty miles north of Charlotte, NC and with a sharp instrument, cut the window seal to the showroom. They then removed the glass and took two new cars off the showroom floor, one a CL500 and a 500SL. This was over the weekend and the tracking device located both cars near Brooklyn NY and they were recovered undamaged! They were then loaded on trucks and hauled back to the dealership but by law may not be sold as a new car, only as a theft recovered vehicle. The loss and recovery damages to be covered by the dealer's ins co.

So goes to show that the system that comes in the cars now do work to help find your lost baby.

What kind of deal would they cut you if it can't be sold as a new car? Might be worth checking into.

Nicked motors

So in theory you could nick it and park it around the corner then report it to the police as a dumped motor. They recover it as stolen then you go into the showroom and buy it as stolen/recovered with a serious drop in price on a new one.
Apart from the odd screw am I missing something here?

I think the moral of this thread is that "the system that comes in the cars now do work to help find your lost baby .... "

an anti-theft device works best if it is a deterrent. To be one, it must be widely known to would-be thieves that stealing property protected by these devices would be in vain.

the moral of the story is that if the anti-theft device is new and not widely known, then it is not a deterrent, but a recovery mechanism, at which point damage has been done to your property.

it's just like those car radios that do not work without the faceplate, when they were newly introduced to the market.
