Brownsville, TX?

Anybody ever lived or still lives in the Brownsville, TX area. I am contemplating a relocation to that area. I am a single dad with a 14 yr old girl. Any suggestions on where to live? I know it's a border town with the associated problems, but have spent time in South Padre and like the area. I have never looked at is as a place to live before, just vacation. Any insight would be appreciated.

Actually, my aunt used to live there, from 1984-1994 approximately.

From what I remember, it doesn't seem like the greatest locale to live in. McAllen, Harlingen and San Benito seemed a little bit "nicer" than most parts of Brownsville did, although at the time, Brownsville didn't seem like much of a ghetto to me. One thing I remember from visiting there when I was maybe 9 is that they have a fairly nice zoo...

BTW, my aunt lives in McAllen right now and likes the town.

I have had to work in Brownsville and from the time I spent there you couldn't pay me enough to transfer there. The work was good, but I didn't see it as a place to live. You could live in Harlingen, Port Isabel, or any of the small towns away from BrownTown and have an enjoyable experience.

That's kind of what I thought.
