Assange granted asylum by Ecuador.

Assange granted asylum by Ecuador.

This will probably generate plenty of discussion by all

BBC News - Julian Assange: Ecuador grants Wikileaks founder asylum

Ecuador has granted asylum to Wikileaks founder Julian Assange two months after he took refuge in its London embassy while fighting extradition from the UK.

Ecuador's Foreign minister Ricardo Patino: "We believe that his fears are legitimate"

Doesn't say much for Ecuador. Must be more full of thieves than the Oklahoma territory of 150 years ago.

Information will always find a way to the public. Have to love the sentiment around here that governments should not be trusted with our monies and freedoms, but on the other hand, they should be trusted with secrets about the operations of governments.

What I find most troubling is the UK's implication that it can strip the Ecuadorian embassy of its diplomatic privilege and simply storm the place to grab Julian Assange ... the consequences of such an action would be terrible and far-reaching, and would have a massively destablizing effect on global relations.

Such an action would be a clear violation of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, for one thing, and would likely result in the destruction of British embassies the world over. Taken to the extreme, I can see it triggering a world war.

Its just pressure to get them to hand the little worm over to them. He deserves a day at the dock.

I agree he should be held to account -- as should Bradley Manning -- but it must be done in a legal fashion.

Is that legal? Should it be? That sounds like KGB / GRU tactics from the Cold War. I thought we wanted to avoid that sort of thing.

And our governments conduct has confirmed your suspicions.

I think they deserve whistleblower protection (like Ellsberg). The good far outweighs the bad in this case. Manning and Assange have caught the gov lying about many things including war crimes committed by our forces.

Yes, problem.
Most of the stuff he revealed was not like Daniel Ellsberg in the VietNam war, where lying and cheating was revealed, even criminal activity which later led to prosecution of some senior Army members.

Bradley Manning is a punk kid who did this to see if he could get away with it.

In doing that, he didn't reveal any secret plots by the US, or the existence of UFOs, but he did ruin a lot of diplomatic initiatives and reduce trust.

On a global scale, when that reduces the ability of the US to act as a third-party negotiator without the world knowing, it hurts those innocent people for whom negotiations are being conducted.

Assange is like a fence, but Bradley Manning is the real thief.
