I just bought a japanese laquered bowl with lid

it looks pretty cool with black exterior brick red interior and a blue plant decoration on the front. It needs come cleaning and perhaps a little buffing but is pretty solid just a bit worn around the outside. The interior is pristine and shines like a duesenberg ready for pebble beach.;)

I'll post some pics tomorrow.

Any suggestions for cleaning?

Most bowls do well with Lysol:

I'm not sure about that red interior shining like a Duesenberg, however...........would probably scare the hell out of me in the morning.

Here are some pics of the bowl. The brand name seems to be RYURU.

.

It appears that you'll need a new seat. HD sells them for cheap.

I called an antiques dealer and asked about this lacquer ware. She said to use VERY mild dish detergent on the inside and warm but not hot water.

You know that some of these pieces are strictly for show or for dry food only, right?

NOT for soup or HOT rice

They look great, don't want to destroy them.

How to Clean Japanese Lacquerware | eHow.com

Store Japanese lacquerware away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity and temperatures.

Don't use furniture polish or oils on Japanese lacquerware.

I would presume that the red paint has a good quantity of lead, and would not use the bowl to serve ANY food.

Can it be used for completely processed and discarded food?
