Annual maintainance & repair costs?

A mechanic told me that the average car owner spends a little over $2,000 annually on maintainance and repair, per car. This seems high to me. (Although I have spent considerably more on my 73 450sl in the last year. With my 94 jag. xj6 I just spent $1,000 for a new fuel pump and air conditioning repairs, but other than that its only needed oil changes and some new brake pads & front rotors.)

I'm curious about what everyone else spends on average.

For last year cost of maintainance:
'98 W163: $659.96
'95 R129: $333.38
'87 W124: $1,071.26

Don't ever add it up, just throw the reciepts in a file and keep on driving. Had enough worries over the years. I just like driving my Benz and I know it's less than any Olds diesel ever made.:D

Don’t remember the costs, but in the first year of the 400E I’ve done the following:

tires and wheels
Fan belt and tensioner
30K mile tune up
exhaust system
tachometer
windshield
replaced 1 of 2 fuel pumps
repair on the emergency brake

Yip I agree once you start looking at the numbers a schwinn starts looking good.

I don't track the costs. I typically buy needed parts for routine stuff in quantity, and for two or three cars at a time, depending on what's coming due. Log the maintenance on the PC, and despite my best efforts, seem to end up scrapping most of the receipts after the monthly statement is reconciled.
