Volvo S60 transmission no 3rd gear.

A buddy of mine called me the other day about his car. He owns a 2001 Volvo S60 T5 with 113k miles on it. He's owned it for about 8 years and put 90k miles on it himself.

He always serviced it at the volvo dealer so I know that it's well taken care of. He left for Canada at the beginning of the year and let a friend of his borrow the car during that time. When he got it back 3rd gear was not working.

You could shift it manually through the shifttronic deal but when you hit third, it will go into neutral. Fourth and Fifth gear is fine.

His friend told him that he took the car in for servicing and the shop flushed the transmission which is when this happened.

Does anyone know anything about these Volvo 5 speeds? I'd like to know if they interchange with anything else, or if this is a common problem that can easily be address.

The transmission shop that he took it to gave him quotes of $2500 for a valve body and almost $4k for a rebuild which doesn't make a lick of sense on an 11 year old car.

Who cares, have the shop pay for it if they caused it to happen.

Mistake could've been made by filling the transmission with trans fluid through the B4. Or what could be more likely is that it's a valve body and solenoid issue.

Thanks All, I think this problem is going to solve itself in the sense that my buddy has pretty much decided to get something else.

LOL

There is a certain fastener on some applications of the Volvo that if you go to do a transmission service and remove this particular fastener then you can cause problems with the transmission. On these particular applications you are supposed to fill via the transmission fluid dipstick tube ONLY.

I know two people who drove Volvos of this vintage, though I think both were the AWD wagon, whatever it was called. Both replaced the transmission at about 100K miles. Frankly, I think this is the normal lifetime of the transmission...

That makes no sense...

A shop caused damage to the transmission, making it not to shift into 3rd gear as a result of its service? And no attempt to hold the shop accountable for their mistake? I've got a bridge for sale, I'll even make a special offer to your friend...

YMMV, just my $0.02, throwing money away for someone else's mistake.

I have known several people with volvos of this vintage, and every single one of them has been nothing but problems--my friend's '00 S60 probably being the worst.

You know a Volvo driver who goes fast enough to try to get into 3rd gear? Now that is one of a kind!

From what I understand, the shop agreed to buy the car for $3k which is whom he is selling it to. I don't think it's a great price and I gave my buddy some options but he does not want to put a used transmission in and a rebuilt one is close to $4k which does not make sense so he's taking them up on the deal.

The S60 T5 is no slouch. It makes 250hp out of a small 2.3 liter engine. The S60 R makes 300hp. I gotta say, I really liked this car.
