I've never actually been to Austin, but I have the impression that Austin is the most un-Texas-like town in the state, even though it is the capital. It's full of smart, creative, broad-minded people and they tend to be the most non-judgmental, accepting, and inclusive people you run into.

Good for Austin!

Austin is San Francisco East. I spent a lot of time in and around Austin as a child. My Grand Dad ranched not far from there. It's changed a BUNCH. I wouldn't AT ALL call it "un Texas" though. Anyone who says that only THINKS that they know something about Texas.

In all seriousness, they're doing some good work, and Austin is about the most liberal part of TX. But....

Agreed, having lived and worked for 2 1/2 years in the SA area and frequently visiting friends in the Austin area during that time.

That said, I got rather put off about Austin as a whole during a holiday visit a few years back. I went along with my friends to view the New Years Eve parade at 9 to 10 PM or so - this was the first time they'd attended as well. It was supposed to be a "family-oriented" event, held earlier at night so people could bring their children along, with food vendors set up in one area, and fireworks immediately after the parade.

While there were some parts of the parade that were aimed towards entertaining kids or families in the holiday spirit, for the most part - I'd say at least 2/3 of the parade - were floats or groups that were participating for no other reason than to advertise their support for some political, environmental, or social agenda. Even my friend's children thought this was the strangest definition of "family oriented" they'd seen.

The fireworks display turned out to be a "firework" display - two rockets launched from the top of one building - and that was it - over in 20 seconds. The remainder of our time there, I heard many people passing by commenting what a joke that turned out to be.

The food vendors area was a joke as well. $8 for one of those little microwave pizzas you could hold in one hand - or a single slice of a regular sized pizza. A hamburger - nothing but a piece of meat and the bun - was similarly priced - ketchup, mustard, other condiments or dressings considerably extra. And the service was beyond rude - if you didn't immediately know what you wanted to order when you got to the front of the line, the vendors didn't have the time of day for you. I got to the front of one line at a hamburger stand - to where I could finally read the menu he had posted - and the guy asked me what I wanted. I told him to give me a second, as with my eyesight I hadn't been able to read his menu until then. He IMMEDIATELY turned his head and yelled loudly - not a foot from my ear - "NEXT!" - and I was almost physically shoved out of the way by the next people in line. My friends reported a similar experience at other stands - they were there to simply sell something resembling food and make money as fast as possible, and didn't give a damn otherwise.

As a group, our attitude was "We drove over 30 miles, brought the kids along, in butt cold freezing weather, for THIS nonsense?". With something like over 1 1/2 hours to go before the midnight fireworks display, and the only other activity going on was an adult oriented dancing/drinking party going on in one square, freezing our rears off with nothing to do - we decided to pull the plug on that fiasco.

We left, stopped by an HEB to get the fixings for our own New Years dinner, and headed to their house to watch the fireworks and celebrations on TV from the warmth of their living room.

Needless to say, none of us have ever bothered going back to that particular event.

thank you for the update, I think I'll take a pass on a visit to Austin. Perhaps they should consider relocating Austin next door to San Francisco.

I like Austin. Was always my favorite city in Texas when I was touring. Good time, every time. That town is full of great people and great musicians.

Never got pulled over there though.... fortunately.

If they think you are being too lippy, they might arrest you and instead of taking you to jail, they might take you to a very special invitation only basement party where everyone has whips and chains so that you can really get into the Austin lifestyle.....

I love Austin, have been going there for years to visit friends and family, but don't think all the kind people are so tolerant. They are tolerant IF you adhere to their world view, but differ from that and you will find them as intolerant as east TX penecostals.....
