Any electricians out there?

I don't know all that much about electricity.

Is this bad? Just a little tape and it'll be like new, right?

Thanks!

I'm not an electrician but I'll comment anyway. It's OD and that's how we roll.

I assume you are concerned about the splice. I don't like it. When I splice something I will solder it first and I use the heat shrink on each lead. Then I'll wrap it in electrical tape after ward. Just seems safer that way. I would also take the plug off and make sure the out side shielding goes all the way to the plug. May not be a big deal but again,m it just seems safer to me.

Take it for what it's worth which probably is not too much.

I can't really see things in that picture all that well. With those type of connectors, though, it would be very cheap and easy to buy a length of new cord like that and just replace the whole section of cord. That kind of cord is available in bulk, so you can buy whatever length you need. Make sure you get the same gauge although, that looks plenty heavy.

Good luck with it.

Cord is just worn out basically. When the external sheathing over the current conducters is broken. Too much repedative flexing occurs in the multi strand wires there. More importantly perhaps pull stress capacity on the extension cord is seriously reduced. Most people junk extension cords like that. Could eventually present a shock hazzard as well. From experience it is not as easy to wind up a damaged or deteriorated extension cords either.

Don't need to be an electrician to see that it is bad! Replace it post haste. What does it go to?

Before I studied to be a printer, I studied to be an industrial electrician. But after getting shocked several times in shop class, my shop teacher suggested another course of study.

Worked around electricity and electronics for a lot of years. Seldom shocked and always using certain rules does minumise the risk somewhat if and when it occurs. It does seem to be a reality is that it will happen from time to time when it is pretty much a daily work venue.

Knowledge and experience does not always make you adopt bad habbits though. Familiarity does not always breed contempt either.

Too many so called accidents means one should seek out there income otherwise. Based on the simple premise of otherwise it may be fatal to continue.

Yeah! Sure. You're just the person I've been looking for.

This week on eBay, I am having a special on toaster knives and bathtub boom-boxes. Next week I'm offering a great circuit tester. Plug it into any outlet and put the two leads on your tongue. If you can feel a tingle, the plug has power.

How much does a new house cost compared to an extension cord?

Thanks for some good chuckles, folks.

That's an extension cord and until a month ago it was carrying power to a dehumidifier. I went to replace the dehumidifier and noticed the insulation breaking off near the female end, and as I traced the cord back past boxes and a file cabinet the insulation just kept breaking. At that point I couldn't get it out of the wall outlet fast enough! (It wasn't in the bathroom, I just took it in there because the light was good enough to take the picture.)

It's now taking up residence in the trash can, so I think it's safe there. What you can't see in the pic, though, is that the insulation on the common lead is discolored, it looks more like the porcelain on a spark plug. I'm guessing that as the dehumidifier died, it was drawing additional current and heated up the wire, and if that's the car I was pretty lucky.

I just thought some of you might enjoy the pic...and I was right.
