My son's rite of passage...

My 13 year old son was standing next to me earlier this morning when I noticed the level of peach fuzz on his face is getting a bit thicker. With him being a redhead, it's difficult to see the fuzz because it's so light in color.

Tonight, I get to take my son through that rite that all young men have passed...learning how to shave.

When I was that age, my dad handed me a Bic, which felt like it was cutting the first couple of layers of skin off with the hair.

I currently use the Gillette Fusion. Due to the sheer cost of those blades, he won't be using that.

Which brand of throw away blade would you suggest I start this young man out with? Since he'll probably start of with 2 shaves a month, I want to get some cheap throw aways.

At two shaves a month, the Fusion won't be that expensive, and can be purchased as a throwaway, with an attached handle.

A double-edged safety razor. Gives a good shave if you're not a complete uncoordinated putz. I soap up in the shower rather than using a mug.

Blades are about $5 for a 10pk, and often American-made.

I have my grandpa's old blade holder. I had planned on giving that to him sometime in the future. Perhaps that will make a great Christmas gift for him. I'll give him the entire set, soap mug, brush, and stand.

For now, I'm just looking for a throw-away with handle to start him off with.

I was actually thinking about the Gillette Custom Plus 3 disposable. It's either that or pour some cream on it and let the neighbor's cat lick it off...

I know you said disposable but IMHO, this is the best razor ever made. It has tiny wires that run across the blades to prevent "scalping" the skin - especially important when learning how to hold and move the razor.

I haven't seen these before. I'll have to see if they are carried locally.

I started at about that age with whatever middle of the road razor my dad was using at the time. These days I'm using a Gillette Sensor Excel which I've had since some time in the early 2000's or maybe earlier. One time I got nearly five months out of a blade while shaving six days a week (stupid FOB PX didn't carry replacements). Usually I change them about once a month, so the cost isn't that much.
