I don't.

I remember him as a cynical calculating actor.

He brought plain talk and nascent senility to the White House. There will never be another President like him again.

History has already been too kind to Reagan.

One of my favorite Reagan sayings is that you can get a lot done ( in government) if you don't care who gets the credit.

That is a good saying. Whomever scripted it for him deserves some credit. I'd say Reagan got credit for plenty that he had little to do with.

Peggy Noonan (speech writer) wrote that all the young guns in the Reagan WH were vying to show they were all "the smartest guy in the room". She said, they all found out that it was actually Reagan who was the smartest guy in the room--her opinion.

Reagan compromised. Like Jimmy Carter before him.

Reagan led the nation. No president since Eisenhower, including Obama, has done a better job of leadership. His seduction of the American people forced Congress to follow his lead. One may not care for where he led the nation but lead it he did. Without apology. And a 10,000 watt smile and a million dollar laugh. It's amazing what people will do for an inspiring leader -- for good or ill.

Who would be surprised that Peggy Noonan thought well of Reagan?

He was a supremely competent figurehead. Nobody can doubt that.

Sadly I have to agree.

I concur although not sadly like Tom. Both parties have provided leaders in the past. I don't see the same type of compromising efforts though in Washington today. It's unfornuate that both parties can't just agree to disagree on some issues and work on the other stuff together.

Don't both parties agree we need to get rid of the debt? And the stuff about military projects that even the military wants to cancel, but "Congress" keeps pouring money into it because it's a pork project for their district(s).

Electric Boat in Groton, CT is building 2 new nuclear subs in the same year since the 80's. Joe Courtney-D CT is touting that fact in his ads. He has secured $500MM thus far for the second sub (I've seen $2-4B each) and also secured over $80MM for SUBASE New London, more in his first two years in Congress than was secured in the previous decade.

Good for CT jobs, i.e. bringing home the bacon and getting re-elected. But I'm not entirely sure we need two new nukie subs (maybe we do?) and I do question the security of a base 6.5 miles up river with one channel deep enough to get in and out which passes under the I-95 bridge. Wouldn't take much to take a sub and the base out of the equation. But voters see the $$$ coming back into the state so it's all good.

I don't miss Ronny Ray-Gun, but maybe it's time to give deceased politicians a second look....

I would substitute showmanship for leadership, otherwise I agree.

The important details often overlooked about Regan were his use of the President’s Master card and the 2 recessions that took place under his watch. I guess the spnding was done to help the nation....

But he was a great showman, the best to play to the national stage!
