Drive one in Germany and they'll hack it to bits for you.

Mercedes-Benz crushes ‘unlawlful’ Gullwing replica

This will no longer be tolerated by Mercedes-Benz. Badging or no, the glorious Gullwing shape is a work of ‘applied art’ and has been under copyright protection for decades. It’s the enforcement that has been spotty. That is, until 2012. Emboldened by a December 2010 Stuttgart regional court’s ruling affirming the Gullwing design’s copyright status, Mercedes stepped up investigating copyright violations. It is not legal to copy the Gullwing design – at least not in Germany. Gullwing AG, a German firm which planned to introduce a new Gullwing using the original Ostermeier plans and fitted with modern drivetrain, was shut down shortly after the court ruling.

It's said that Ferruccio Lamborghini once saw a Countach replica and was so darn impressed with some of the corrections made to his design, that he actually gave it a thumbs up! What a difference in mentality!

I saw one at Auburn the fall auction about ten years ago with modern E class running gear. Looked very nice.

If anyone is truly interested, Mark Passarelli is the guy to talk to.

Beautiful work! Passarelli's story is truly inspiring; he actually started in the film industry like I did! That, and the fact that he actually recreates 300SL frames and deliciously crafted luggage from scratch. Admirable work!

Thanks for sharing!

My idea is to one day get a replica, stick a diesel engine in it, and see if it is possible to take it around the world... dream, dream, dream... and quite a step up from my current 300TD PanAmerican trip!
