Coulter gets called out

Open letter from John Franklin Stephens

Quote:

Come on Ms. Coulter, you aren’t dumb and you aren’t shallow. So why are you continually using a word like the R-word as an insult?

I’m a 30 year old man with Down syndrome who has struggled with the public’s perception that an intellectual disability means that I am dumb and shallow. I am not either of those things, but I do process information more slowly than the rest of you. In fact it has taken me all day to figure out how to respond to your use of the R-word last night.

I thought first of asking whether you meant to describe the President as someone who was bullied as a child by people like you, but rose above it to find a way to succeed in life as many of my fellow Special Olympians have.

Then I wondered if you meant to describe him as someone who has to struggle to be thoughtful about everything he says, as everyone else races from one snarkey sound bite to the next.

Finally, I wondered if you meant to degrade him as someone who is likely to receive bad health care, live in low grade housing with very little income and still manages to see life as a wonderful gift.

Because, Ms. Coulter, that is who we are – and much, much more.

After I saw your tweet, I realized you just wanted to belittle the President by linking him to people like me. You assumed that people would understand and accept that being linked to someone like me is an insult and you assumed you could get away with it and still appear on TV.

I have to wonder if you considered other hateful words but recoiled from the backlash.

Well, Ms. Coulter, you, and society, need to learn that being compared to people like me should be considered a badge of honor.

No one overcomes more than we do and still loves life so much.

Come join us someday at Special Olympics. See if you can walk away with your heart unchanged.
I wonder if she will have the convictions to apologize or show up. Seems politically she has to say something but I doubt it will be sincere.

Childish, and disrespectful of those who have actual cognitive disabilities.

Because that's what everyone thinks of when they hear the word and there could not possible be other interpretations of the word right?

I believe we have a member here who has a kids with mental challenges. Go ahead and tell him his kid is retarded and see what kind of response you get. Better yet, go to the Special Olympics and say it. Go for it. I dare you.

Using that word to describe folks with limited abilities is no longer considered polite.

using it to describe a person who is not mentally challanged is very low class.

I got myself in a little trouble here a while back over my use of the same term. Used to be there were seven words you couldn't say. That list seems to have expanded in recent years.

Really? That guy gives me the creeps. He has an obsession with this site that seems at the very least to boarder on a pathological disorder.

Next time, he's really going to fake us out and wear a fake beard and moustache when he posts...

I'm sorry you're feeling disrespected.

Do you think Coulter meant something other than Obama resembled someone with a cognative disability?

So if Coulter had tweeted "I highly approve of Romney's decision to be kind and gentle to the cognative disabled person.", everything would be honky dory, is that right?

Lest all the bed wetters feigning outrage today forget:

"No, no. I have been practicing...I bowled a 129. It's like -- it was like Special Olympics, or something." --making an off-hand joke during an appearance on "The Tonight Show", March 19, 2009 (Obama later called the head of the Special Olympics to apologize)

Here's the peachparts thread back when Obama did that:

Since we all know who Mr. Williams is, perhaps we can find out who is this Coulture he's talking about? :D

What's interesting about he spelling of "coulture" . . . it's been consistently used by former member chillcut, occasionally by MTUPower.

But Coulter never used the term in the context of either of your hypothetical scenarios, she used it to describe someone who exhibits cognative disability.
