uh oh - step daughter career issues

The oldest step daughter graduates from nursing school on Dec 8th and has been interning at a hospital in the town where she is living. She has already gotten and accepted a job offer at the hospital. Today she had a patient that will probably die over the next day or so and she is all torn up about it. She called her mom all upset and crying. I asked her mom (who has been a nurse for 26 years) did she go through the same thing when her first patient died and she said yes she did. Hopefully, she will get used to death being a part of the job.

She made straight A's the whole time she was in nursing school.

The best thing? Let mama handle this. Besides, us guys don't handle "death" anywhere near the same as the girls do.

Your best bet?

Stand back and left the professional handle it. As they say...

"Been there. Done that."

BTW, if you happen to be FORCED into offering some advice, preface it with "Now, I'm a guy and I can't say that what I'm about to say will be in the ball-park..."

Then...go down hill after that. The sooner you get off the wagon, the easier it will be for you to not try to explain what you didn't really say but they're sure you said it anyway.

Either that, or go for a long walk in the woods and don't come back 'til the bar closes. Both options are painless.

Jim,

My niece got her RN about 3 years ago. She started in a child section of a hospital and went through the same thing. She seems to have gotten past it quite well.

Congratulations to your step daughter for a job well done. Since she had the gumption to make such good grades, I'm sure she'll have the gumption to deal with the challenges.

Thanks Larry. I feel like she will be fine too.

She is iwrock and she is a beauty but she does have a bf. She is one of the few 22 yr old females that seems to have her head screwed on right. Her bf is in the AF and is a navigator in a C130. He owns a '01 Porsche 911 which makes him alright in my book. When she graduates it is going to be like a $1200/month raise to the lovely Mrs engatwork.

I'm going to take mg's advice and stay out of it. In my opinion everyone dies. Some sooner than others.

I can remember when my close friend lost his first patient shortly after becoming a doctor. It wasn't easy.

Same story.

Brother interned at a hospital. Lost first patient on Christmas Eve, and he didn't take it well...even though said patient was at a very advanced age.

Fast forward a few decades, and he talks about deaths like "watercooler" banter...

Congrats on the results !!

From a guys perspective ~ death & taxes are both inevitable ! Did she cry when she got her first tax bill ? I felt like it when I got my last !!
Best not tell her though !!

Hmmm. Wife never had that happen yet. Her first time was as a volunteer and on her first night, she had a patient die on her right in her arms. The lady was feeling faint and she supported her and the lady slumped and died. Preceptor was shaken and couldn't continue but wife was fine. Perhaps she should have taken a job as a CNA first and seen if she can handle the dying thing before spending all that time as an RN? A lot of RN schools here are insisting on the student having a CNA license first which makes them have direct patient contact before allowing them to proceed.

Perhaps that will help her move into something like say Dermatology where there are less cases of death?

I hate the dying thing myself and I shut her up whenever she tells me somebody died. I live with the fantasy that nobody dies on her shift.

You got a 911 yet?

Only pic I have of her on my phone is her crossing the finish line at the end of a marathon run (did I mention she is a runner). She is sweaty and all in that pic so I won't post it. I'll get a good one of her and put it up sometime.
