new voter id law in Indiana

I went down to Lafayette City hall this morning at 6 am to vote. When I got there there were about a dozen people ahead of me. As I waited it soon became apparent there were significant problems with the new voter id requirements. People ahead of me found that they were not in the computer or were listed under the wrong address. In addition the people running the check-in did not seem to know how to run the system. What normally would have taken ten minutes in years past took over a half hour. As we left there were at least fifty people in line.

Just how many cases of voter fraud have ever been reported in Tippecanoe county in the last ten years?

This is a letter to the editor I sent to the local paper this morning. I'll be interested to see the answer.

jim crow pops up in another form, how expertly timed immediately before a major election, nothing like being able to legitimately claim the the disenfranchisement of voters is partly to blame by simple disorganization and confusion over recently enacted laws. Well done by those who would seek to limit the rights of people who-

-Have limited time to vote on election day and may turn away from the line
-cant stand the bother of waiting forever even if they do have the time
-weren't able to get appropriate id fast enough with bureaucratic turn around out of their control
-couldn't afford fees and taxes on the appropriate id they suddenly needed

about to vote, ill let you know what the new voter id laws have in effect in RI.

-didn't get ID due to fear of arrest for unrelated minutia such as unpaid speeding tickets.

in that case though, they probably have a drivers license.

On a related note, its amazing how many reasonably and intelligent people fall into the "didn't pay a speeding ticket in another state and subsequently may have a warrant or a red flag if ever caught driving there again" category.

Fortunately, these people should still be able to vote in their own state.

For those of you who DOUBT the electoral system, I would challenge you to volunteer your time to straighten it out. I can promise you that they will accept your offer of help with open arms.

I think it would be good for everyone to spend some time volunteering their help in the electoral process.

My wife says half the people on relief at her school (parents) will vote R.

So the R's plan may backfire on them.

took more than an hour all said in done, but no ID related delays, the RI ones are pretty reasonable. It doesn't have to be a photo ID, bills and other documents proving you live where you are currently recorded as living are acceptable. Seems the same as last time, im not sure what really changed apart from them talking about a new law.

There was a large turnout though, and enterprising bake sale ladies made the wait delicious

short wait

I got to my new (i moved this summer) polling place about 7:35am and there were about 30-40 people in front of me --- we were waiting outside. Glad I had my coat on. I had 9year old daughter with me and I told her the rules:
  • You have to whisper when we get inside.
  • You don't get to touch.
  • Don't tell anyone who I voted for.

I showed my Driver's License with my new address and was asked my address. After I said the numbers, the clerk pushed the touch screen, printed the small receipt type thingy that he and I both signed. They gave me an electronic access card and directed me to the middle table where I was directed to Machine #3. We are electing Alderman today. And more importantly for me an entire new School Board since we just voted this Spring to become an independent school district.

My daughter did quite well and received a "I Voted Today!" sticker when we were leaving.
