vw tdi vis a vis mercedes, and Isuzu diesels

Has anyone out there owned a VW tdi, a four or five cyl. Mercedes diesel, and an Isuzu diesel, in their journey?
I am considering a VW diesel, but am somewhat leary of the computer-manipulated tdi. One of the reasons I gravitate towards diesels is simplicity...and the VW tdi doesn't strike me as simple. Has it proven to be as reliable as its ancestors?

a friend of mine owns a vw tdi ,he loves the car except the fact that the timing belt has to be changed every 60kms(36000miles) .the 2002 models were changed to 120kms(80000miles).
i guess with that great mpg they have to get you somehow

Thanks, zr one.
Reminds me of another topic...When visiting our great neighbor to the north, My mercedes has literally purrrrred on the diesel purchased there. Anyone out there have cetane specs from typical Canadian and US stations?
Do the tdi's in Canada come standard with block heaters? I.ve been told by the dealers down here[ well, I've been told just about everything by car dealers], that the tdi doesn.t need a block heater.

While my VW diesels aren't TDI - I regularly every 30-40K miles change the timing belt and valve cover gasket - cheap insurance $45CDN and takes only an hour. The damage caused by a broken timing belt is not worth the cost of NOT changing frequently. As an aside - every 60K miles I also change the idler pulley for the timing belt and the crank gear & bolt for the timing belt as they are known to fail after this mileage. The gear/bolt loosened on my wife's 94 causing $1500.00 in damage including rebuilding the crankshaft. There is only a half-moon key holding the gear onto the crank and when the bolt loosens from vibration - the end of the crank shears off - not the key on the gear! There is a new improved 12 point bolt that comes with the new gear. Hopes this helps someone.

Just got a VW Jetta Wagon TDI last November. Love It! It is my daily driver and my MB is for the weekends.
First diesel I've ever owned so I don't know too much yet, only thing I've done is the first oil change. But the gas mileage has been great especially in light of rising gas prices...
Chose the wagon because it is the only model made and assembled in Germany, which makes a big difference.
Good luck!

I just sold my 97 Jetta TDi.
I had to if I wanted to get my 89 420SEL (new project car)

I can easily say that my jetta was probably the best car I've ever owned. Not a lick of trouble during it's 4 year 101K mile duration.
I even had the Wetterauer chips in the car for over 80K miles and no blown turbo or head gasket. Great torque & mileage. I will really miss my TDi and I plan to get another one sometime down the road.

I know there is another TDi owner in these forums somewhere....I can't think of who though.

Here I be....

1996 Passat Wagon TDI here.

Owned this rare beast for about 18 months and 32,000 miles, and can quite happily say that it is one of the best kept secrets out there. I average 45mpg in a 50/50 combo of city/highway driving. It has a range of 1000+ miles, depending on the driver . It has more rear legroom and comfort than any other car I've sat in in the last 5 years, barring an S-class, and there is still room for two dogs in the luggage area. With the same 1.9 liter 4 cyl lugging around a much bigger and heavier body than the Golf/Jetta versions, it is no rocketship off the line, but I hold my own in DC/Baltimore traffic quite nicely. On the move the torque means that I rarely have to shift out of 5th to perform any manouvers.

I'm currently looking at dumping my wife's Explorer so that she can inherit the Passat while I get a 300cd to play with. The Explorer is actually quite a good vehicle, and has been remarkably trouble free over the last 50K miles, but any Ford product approaching 100K makes me nervous, so its going. I'll give my opinion on the MB diesel as soon as I can.
