Question Rust repair, worth it?

I have fixed more and more things that were not right with the 300CD and it just keeps growing on me. It's even got my friends who said stuff like "oh man, it's an old car.." to "wow, it's actually really nice"

Now the only thing that still bothers me is the rust...

There are some rust on the right and left rear quarter panels. The right rear panel is pretty bad. There are also rust spots near the rear window, and one more smalll spot below the 300CD emblem.

I was quoted $850 for everything to be repaired, but without a complete repaint of the quarter panels. In other words, the body shop is just going to touch up the paint after it's done. I'm thinking that it wouldn't be so bad.... or should I go ahead and pay the $1200 for a full repaint of the quarter panels?

BTW, he won't use fiberglass, he's going to cut the rusted panel and replace it with new metal...

or maybe... I should bargain a lil more?

2k is a lot of $$ to sink into an '83. I think, if the quarter panels have rusted so much then you should also check other parts of the car like the floorpan. Maybe forget about the touch up paint and drop the price on the sheet metal fix, then go ahead and do a total paint job?

When it comes to rust, its always a trick question as you'd never know when it would be cured ... perhaps never. A lot depends on the surrounds and history of the car.

In this case, would spending the 1,200 (I would recommend this as its not much of a point forking out 850 with the prospect of forking out more later) equate to your total satisfaction in keeping the car? Or would you rather discount the 1,200 and look for a better bargain (i.e. slightly newer car with less rust problems - check out the new car forum since you're at it).

Looking at the way your MBs are priced in your area, it might be worth the while to see whats being offered in the market. You never know ...
