switching car phones
I've just purchased a 1985 300D which came with a professionally installed car phone. It's a motorola unit that sits in a bracket that extends into the passenger's footwell. The hand unit plugs in via a modular plug (similar to an RJ11 or RJ45 connector, but not quite the same) to a jack near the console's front edge. The phone was set up to use the Cellular One network, now Cynergy, I believe.
My question is this: I and the rest of my family subscribe to the Verizon network and we all use the same type of ubiquitous Nokia 5185i phones. Would it be possible to be able to tap into the power, antennae, and speakerphone circuits that are already nicely installed in the car by using some kind of adapter (nokia to motorola modular connecter) which could then be plugged into the modular jack already installed in the car? I don't think that phone networks are an issue here, just plug and power compatibility. But I may be wrong. Is anyone out there familiar with this type of thing? Thanks, Dan |

There's a box under the rear seat that must be the rf unit you mention. I didn't even think about the analog vs. digital thing, but I wouldn't want to go analogue anyway. That wouldn't make much sense these days. I'm going to try to get a wiring schematic from motorola to see if it's possible to at least tap into the power and little speakerphone box using the modular plug, but it's not something I want to get too deeply involved with.
Thanks, Dan |
