Pretty much the most boring way you could imagine. We dated for a long while, and didn't keep a whole lot of secrets from each other, so it wasn't a great surprise or anything. Hard for me to imagine in this day and age that I would propose to marry someone, without already having talked about it a good deal*.

Exceptions might include - Hedy Lamarr (too old & dead), Audrey Hepburn (same), oh well.

Completely cliché. On my knee in the middle of a nice restaurant on Valentine's Day. Thankfully, being 16 years ago, that was still acceptable. Now everything seems to be choreographed and orchestrated to become the next YouTube sensation.

I did it offhandedly while driving in a car. IIRC. we were talking about taking a motorcycle trip in the summer for two weeks, camping and so forth. She said she couldn't do it being unmarried so I said, well then lets get married. I cannot remember if she said yes immediately or not.

Great gal my wife.

Why not? Rings and fancy-schmancy weddings are just trappings. Far better to spend the $$$ honeymooning around the world for six months.

Put her on a treasure hunt in the house. I supplied phone numbers of friends who had the answers to help her find the next clue. The ring an I were at the end.

We took a weekend to Chicago....then the two week motorcycle tour in August up through canada and out to the bay of Fundy, down the east coast and back to Lafayette.

Cuddling together immediately following, uhm, err, recreational activities.

To the Labrador???:D

Could SHE not also propose?

The first wife: I had it set up with the night club owners. At midnight, they changed the song to a slow one, cleared the dance floor and slid a chair on stage. I walked up, was handed a microphone and called my then girlfriend on to the dance floor. I asked her in front of 300 people.

Third wife: I bought her a really nice white gold Claddagh ring with a pink, heart shaped diamond for Christmas. After a year, I asked to see the ring, as I wanted to get it appraised for insurance purposes. I had another heart shaped diamond that I wanted installed, and the pink one used for a pendant.

After getting the ring back from the jeweler, I planned a day of hiking and a picnic near the top of Mt. Ogden, overlooking the valley in the Wasatch Mountains. After eating, I pulled the Claddagh ring with the new diamond in it, placed it on her left ring finger while saying "So...you wanna?" She replied "Sure, why not?"

Since this wasn't the first rodeo for either of us, and since she already has more than enough jewelry, I decided that I wasn't going to buy wedding bands. Instead, since I was working in Aerospace and had access to the material, I made both of our wedding bands out of titanium. She said that she likes it better than one that could have been bought, because I took the time to machine and polish it, laser etched our names on the inside, etc. After we wed, I handed her the remainder of the 6" length of titanium that was used to make the rings. She still has that piece of stock, in her jewelry box...

I think it's a much better idea to just bring up the concept conversationally over a period of time rather than putting yourself and your intended under a bunch of pressure. Once you've rationally come to the mutual conclusion that it's a good idea you can then pick out the ring and do a Hollywood style proposal if you want. No stress since you know what the answer's going to be.
