Funny you should bring up the subject.

I drank enough beer while I lived in Germany to float a battleship. About the last six months I lived there over forty years ago, my apartment was two doors from the corner gasthaus and corner store. The exchange rate was about 4 to 1 at the time.

Quite often I would put a case of empties on my shoulder and walk to the corner. The case had 20, 1 liter bottles(about five gallons) of Hofbrau Pilsner. The beer cost 11 marks (About $2.75,) but the deposit on the bottles and the case was 25 Marks (about $6.25.)

After I came back to the states, I had no taste for American beer of any kind. I probably haven't consumed two cases of American Beer in all these years. Until Saturday before last it had probably been 8 years or so since I had any alcoholic beverage of any kind. That day, my lovely bride and I ate at a German restaurant and I had a Hofbrau (what they called "original,") with my meal. It was great.

It's just too bad that the two best products that the Germans make won't mix, MB's and beer.

Everyone bows and scrapes to the Reinheitsgebot, but it actually led to the extinction of lots of regional beers in Germany. A large part of the motivation behind the law was to keep supplies of wheat and rye available for the baking industry, keeping the price of bread affordable.
Purity laws are not a determinant of quality or taste. German beers run the gamut from swill (Beck's) to sublime (Spaten Optimator Dopplebock) just like beers from anyplace.

edit: well not anyplace. France. French beer is uniformly horrible.

edit edit: Except for Fischer. Fischer is decent. But Fischer is from Alsace, which everyone knows is not really France. So there's that.

It's just amazingly pathetic how weak the dollar had become, isn't it?

It's American swill now- not sure if you knew that but it's brewed by Busch right here in the good ole USA. What ever happened to Lowenbrau- was that an epic fail along those lines, too?

They don't seem to be real proud of that fact because they really try hard to fool you into thinking it's still German.

I would go so far as to say that was the entire reason.

This is a great example of government controlling the marketplace, and is a law that needs to be broken.... regularly.
Of course it is broken, by almost every brewing company.
If we adhered to Reinheitsgebot, there would be no Belgians, no Weizens, no rice beer (that is debatable as to good/bad).... even my own favorite summer brew Lemongrass Ginger, would be outlawed.
If you outlaw Lemongrass Ginger, only outlaws will have Lemongrass Ginger.

Agree completely about Fischer d'Alsace

There is no such thing as non-alcoholic beer.

I drank bud when I was a teenager but it didn't take long to change. We made our own beer for a while and that changed my taste. Also I decided I was happier drinking better beer and less of it. My favorite grocery store beer is Grolsch. When they did away with the clay tops it went down a notch.

I cannot comprehend "light, lite beer america" and blank out beer commercials unless someone calls an especially cute one to my attention.

If i could have back all of the money and time spent on alcohol I could easily promise to never let another drop pass my lips. As is I can take it or leave it.

I had some Patron coffee liqueur recently. I liked that. Homemade eggnog was excellent.

I believe "non-alcoholic" referred to the poster; not the beverage.
