You could have reported a lesser figure, but then you might have gotten a nastygram from DMV asking you to explain the discrepancy. This happened to me once. I bought a motorcycle with 6702 miles on it, but wrote 6207 on the title. Since the PO had only put about 200 miles on the bike since registering it, the reported mileage was lower than the previous report mileage. Me and the PO both had to sign the affidavit explaining the error.

as i said i bought it from the original owner so there wasn't an issue about milage except if it had gone in for recalls or updates etc.then it probably would have been flagged by carfax etc.

When I was car hunting for my sister I found a ton of cars like this.

The trick when searching for a used car is to ask them how long they have owned it. If its under a few months, pass they are a flipper.

"How long have you owned it?" -- used to LOVE asking that question.

I got lots of great answers that made me laugh:
-Husband had one answer, then his wife had a totally different answer later.
-Car has brand new tires less than a month or two old, owner has "owned it for 5yrs". Where did you buy the tires? Dunno. Blank look on their face.
-How long have you owned it? 6yrs. How many miles were on it when YOU bought it? Dunno. Blank look on their face.
-Why is the "Issued On" date on the registration dated 2 weeks ago? "Uh, I just transferred the title from my wife's name to make it easier to..uh..sell the car." Yeah.. right
-Have owned the car for 5yrs. Cool. What does that button do? How about that one? They have no idea. Can't identify what most buttons do. They push them and then say "uh.. oh yeah, NOW I remember.. it mutes the radio". Yeah, you probably wouldn't have known that if I didn't let you push the button before answering

I really like the suggestion of someone buying this car from the guy and then starting a fraud claim and getting him in trouble.
