Armed Guards Sent to Patrol Schools in LA, Phoenix
Armed Guards Sent to Patrol Schools in LA, Phoenix - Yahoo! News
Two of the country's largest counties will be sending armed guards to their schools beginning today as students head back to class after the holiday break. Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Arizona's Maricopa County, which includes Phoenix and Tempe, sent a group of armed volunteers, known as his "volunteer posse," to patrol area schools today. He had previously used the group to help bolster security at area malls during the heavy holiday shopping season, and to scope out undocumented immigrants living in the county. Arpaio said it wasn't only the Newtown, Conn., school massacre on Dec.14 that convinced him to enlist his posse to patrol area schools -- a more local threat that resulted in the Dec. 20 arrest of a 16-year-old student at Red Mountain High School in Mesa for a plot to bomb the school and shoot the students and faculty also persuaded him. "She did admit that she was going to blow up the school and shoot people in the school, and that sort of got me more interested in schools that are opening today," Arpaio told ABC News. "The posse was finishing their assignment after Christmas, so why not utilize those resources to patrol the perimeter of schools?" More than 500 volunteers will help to patrol the county's 52 schools, along with members of the sheriff's Special Weapons and Tactics, or SWAT, team when they are not performing their regular duties, along with police dog units, Arpaio said. The volunteers will receive 100 hours of training and drive marked vehicles. In some cases, they will be armed with automatic weapons, he said. "I believe we should put police officers in school, in uniform, armed," Arpaio said. "But so far all the politicians do is talk, talk, talk, and so we're out there doing something." Police officers in Los Angeles County are also taking action as more than a dozen law enforcement agencies increase patrols in area public schools beginning today. "Every division has deployed officers to the actual schools," said Los Angeles Police Department Lt. Andy Neiman. "We'll have officers at every single elementary school this morning as children arrive with parents, and they'll be there for departure at the close of schools today." Neiman said that officers will show up at schools throughout Los Angeles throughout the day to make sure students, faculty and parents are aware of their presence. "It's a reassurance in response to what occurred in Newtown. This is one thing that the leadership here in Los Angeles got together, and Chief Charlie Beck decided he wanted to reassure our community that our kids and schools are safe. We're putting police officers there so they can be seen," Neiman said. The beefed-up presence will continue for an "indefinite" amount of time, he said. Officers will also patrol any private schools that request extra security, according to ABC News station KABC. "We just want to monitor them a little bit closer," said Sgt. Michael Arriaga, spokesman for the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department. "We're going to have an increased presence and instruct our personnel that if nothing serious is pending, then kind of as a routine they should make their presence known." Kim Amer, a parent, told KABC. "I think more security will make people feel better. Right now, when these types of things are going on, you can't have too much security."

There are schools in Texas that have had armed guards for years. They are a part of the Police force and are known as 'Public Service Officers'.
I know one of these Cops and they show up for work in body armor and wearing at least two guns. One is on their hip and one is somewhere else. But they put the onus on stopping trouble before it starts. I have some experience with volunteers and they sometimes go looking for trouble where none exists. They want to be a Hero so badly they are hoping for a situation they can overreact to. Training is the key. I hope no one sees this Arizona thing and thinks 'Dad Gum! I could do that! Where did I leave my shooting iron?' |

Maybe we could bring the soldiers back from the third world countries and put them in/around the schools?
I suspect that in Pookas case they have never had a shooting incident where those armed guards are stationed.

For once a good idea from Sheriff Blowhard, assuming they stay on campus and don't just do some sort of for-show walk through. Even a blind hen gets a worm now and then.

One of the high schools I work at has an armed officer in the lobby all day, every day. Even before all of the recent tragedies. He's a nice guy, very professional.

Now and then there is some kid that thinks he is tougher than the Cop and sets out to prove it. It is over pretty fast and the kid is expelled. The Cops look at is as all just a part of the job and they are trained in how to respond. |

Oh geez... Is this still a thing? I'm looking at my 20th reunion this year, and you know what? We had an armed officer on campus when I was in school. High School that is, I don't really know about the others. He was the "Campus Cop", and was assigned to our school. From what I gather the other high schools had ones of their own. Nobody really thought twice about it then. I this was in a rural California setting, not a big city/inner city area.

The campus cops at my high school sold fake off-campus lunch passes and weed. We loved 'em...

I notice that nowhere in any of the fed's proposals I've seen, at least in the media, is anything regarding this - nothing about actually PROTECTING THE KIDS - just increased registration, outlawing certain weapons and implements, increased fines for being caught carrying in or near a "gun free" zone - very little that would have any actual effect - as predicted, feel good legislation so they can claim they did something and get reelected.

Some responsible parties would logically conclude that if there were going to be copy cat types of occurances. The likelyhood would be they should occur sooner than later.
I also suspect that administrators will be forced to make arrangements for over the longer term or face the possibility of being charged with negligence if something were to occur. This will create a lot of non productive cost to the economy types of jobs and the effectivness of any measures will be limited. Manned metal detectors at all points of school enterance also would seem mandatory as well. Otherwise weapons will get in is almost gauranteed. Unfortunatly just a sign of the times that a percentage our youth are not as well as they once were. Plus they are tending to resort to much more extreme methods to display it. For smaller areas that were considered much safer at one time. With the advent of todays communication systems for youth. May mean they are now far less safe than they once were also has to be a reasonable conclusion. Last edited by barry12345; 01-08-2013 at 06:49 PM. |

Good response, as usual the NRA is right.
When are people going to realize that these psychopath's are cowards and if faced with the prospect of return fire go off and quietly kill themselves in their rooms. Why do you think their are not shootings in inner city high schools? Because they have metal detectors and real security...plus the kids would probably shoot back...

Name a school shooting at an inner city school...I can't come up with one. Probably a little gang related violence I'm sure, but the whole lone gunman shooting up a school is a white middle to upper middle class problem.
