Anyone here from Austin, TX? need BBQ tips

I will be in Austin on Feb 20-23 for a wedding. I want to try some REAL Texas bbq or brisket.

Any recommendations are appreciated!

A great place for breakfast is the Kirby Lane Cafe on Guadalupe. It's right across the street from the University.

Double Dave's Pizza is a good pizza joint. It is on Duval, across from the Seminary of the Southwest.

Maybe not the best, but only because there are so many great choices, but at least the most unique is Stubbs. If there is entertainment that night you can bring a folding chair and sit outside the fence and have one of the best seats in the house. 'Entertainment' is usually someone like Willie or Loretta Lynn, so if a big name is going to be there then show up a few hours early.

County Line on the Lake is also good not only for the food but also for the setting. You are really right on the Colorado River, but through there it is called Lake Austin.

There is a place on Lake Travis that normally has a great view, but right now the view is sort of so-so since the lake is at a very low level.

County Line isn't BBQ...it is icky BBQ sauce with some bits of meat thrown in for texture. And don't let anyone talk you into going to The Salt Lick either.

Here's some real BBQ places.

Ray's
6301 Monsanto Dr.

The Iron Works
100 Red River

Green Mesquite on Barton Springs Rd (no other locations are any good!)
1400 Barton Springs Rd.

Want to take a little road trip in the name of fantastic Central Texas BBQ?
Louie Mueller's
206 W. Second Street
Taylor, TX 76574

Mueller's is about as good as it gets. Approx 35-40mi from downtown Austin in a building that they've been smoking and selling BBQ in since 1949. No plates either (except for beans and cole slaw), cuts are handed to you on red butcher paper. Alternately, I can send you to Lockhart, TX and Blacks or Krause's(sp?), 40mi in the other direction for equally delish fare.

Keep in touch and maybe we could meet in Taylor, I'm only about 40mi past there.

Kirby Lane is good food. Can't go wrong eating there.

The original location, on Kirby Lane, is three or four houses down from where my parents lived when I was born (that house is a specialty pasta house now). KL is staffed by some of the strangest people that you'll ever see. We joke that it should have a sign out front saying "Caution: Multiple Piercing Zone"...you'll be amazed at the body art and hardware hanging off of the wait staff. True Austin, you must try it.

For an interesting place to eat good pizza, try Austin Pizza Garden in Oak Hill (just west of town). Building dates from the mid-1800s and through the years, has been everything from a store to a steak house to a refuge from marauding indians. Pizza, particularly the thin crust with walnut pesto sauce is TDF.

How about chicken-fried bacon? Sodolak's in Snook has it.

Austin Mayoral candidate Will Wynn's organization came up with that. It is, without a doubt, the most brilliant bit of marketing ever pulled on an unsuspecting lumpenproletariat.

Wynn is a piece of work.

You know I thought Rudy's was pretty good, off of I-35 in Round Rock, their moist brisket was awesome. Not a place I'd go out of the way for if you're in downtown, but if passing by, it'd be a good stop.

Muller's in Taylor is a good choice. Taylor is an interesting place, too.

The 'Enchanted Rock' is a giant hunk of granite that expands with the heat from the sun. When it is cooling at night air is pushed out of millions of cracks in the stone and it sounds like humans moaning or crying.

For the best effect you need to climb to the top of the rock. Take something to lay on for the best results and expect there to be lots of others up there as well.

But if you have the time it is worth the visit. It is a bit of a drive, though, from Austin.

A question......

About 20 years ago or so a fellow took me to a pizza place in Austin where the owner had a 'race car' inside the dining area.

I think it was a Ferrari, but I am not sure. It was all roped off so you could see it but not touch it.

Is this place still around? I can't find any mention of it on the Net.
