Antonin Scalia on Gun Control

OOOOOHHHH NOOOOS!!

The most conservative justice on the most conservative Supreme Court in generations doesn't think the second amendment guarantees anyone the right to own whatever weapon they want.

Well, I guess if we can allow a sitting President to circumvent Congress, I guess we should allow a sitting Supreme Court Justice to issue a veiled directive for Congress to attempt gun control laws.

In the last couple years wasn't there an international agreement to enact gun control? I think I remember something about this but don't remember details.

Might be a point under a search for loss of sovereignty. Or maybe subverted democracy, something like that.

Anything is possible. Do you remember a few months ago, when Obama didn't know the mic was on when talking to one of Putins Lieutenants and told him something like, "I'll have more flexibility after the election?"

He seems pretty cozy with these folks:

John Kennedy signed an directive calling for the "Total disarmament of the United States". Now, what that means, is anyone's guess. I believe it is part of the United Nation's plan for world peace. To them, guns ARE the problem and they have to be eliminated. They know that the people won't give them up in rapid fashion, so they plan to phase out guns S-L-O-W-L-Y. Kinda like dropping a frog into a pot of cold water and slowly bringing the water to a boil, that's the plan. Over time, if they can move both the East and West coast to give up guns, they know that they can then move on the South and the Midwest to do the same. All in the name of Safety and Security and under the umbrella of George Bush Senior's New World Order. Peace on Earth, Good Will towards Men.

I feel safer already.

The U.N. Arms Trade Treaty. All the loony-tunes have been pissing their camo BVDs about it. They fail to take into account that U.N. treaties need to be ratified by congress. They further fail to notice that it covers INTERNATIONAL trade, not me selling you a pistol or shotgun within U.S. borders. Tiny little points they love to ignore in order to feed their paranoia.

Yup, anytime a President says he wants Congress to work on something it is clearly a case of the President circumventing Congress.

Uh, you do understand that Obama was saying he wanted Congress to look into this issue and come up with any changes in the gun laws that they found necessary? And that he clearly stated he would make no changes in gun ownership laws since that was Congress job?

And that at least 50% of the EO's he signed were items suggested by Republicans and/or the NRA? And that recent polling shows that at least 90% of the US agrees with the EO's that Obama signed, including a majority of NRA member that were polled?

And that The Speaker of the House said he wanted to see what the Senate came up with before the House would act on any new laws? And that the Senate has replied with they are tired of doing the work of the House for them and that it is about time the Republicans in the House started doing something themselves besides just drawing a paycheck?

Good points Pooka. Sadly they're all points that are being patently ignored by the Slippery-Slope Club.

This is a weird story.

It starts with a comment by Scalia that future gun rights might change due to future Court rulings. Think about how hard that statement must have been to come up with. Only the most advanced legal mind could understand that sometimes things change.

Then it goes on about Obama might do this and might do that and while we are on the subject New York thinks the NRA is a big windbag and watch out because.... Well, the story never really makes a point after that.

Then there is some more of Scalia taking about how wrong Roberts was on the ACA and how it is unconstitutional and not a tax.

It appears the entire point of the story is to get out to the world that if the ACA can make it before the Court again then those that oppose it can count on Scalia's being in their corner.

Agreed. I think it's also about 6 years old. He has however reiterated his position on gun control elsewhere.

The POTUS has gone around Congress on many issues, and continues to do so. So what if he put this particular issue back to Congress to work on...My point is that he's gone around them many times, and will continue to do so on a plethora of issues. There's a fine line between making Congress work for you and going around Congress...Obama has clearly shown what side of that line he's on.
