Thinking of building a long travel prerunner...

Anyone ever own or drive one? A friend has a Ford Ranger, and I had a blast when I took it up to the desert and did some camping.

I am thinking of building a mid 2000s Silverado or Sierra prerunner for this summer, and would like any insight on them if anyone has any experience.

Thinking something like this would be pretty sweet:

why not build an actual race truck, buy a trailer, and tow it to races with the 06 Sierra you already have? Then prerun with the Sierra. Doesn't that already have some super aggressive tires on it and some other mods?

If you did that, you wouldn't have to worry about still being road legal, and you could have some fun with the construction of the race vehicle. My 2 cents.

A prerunner to me is a good way to spend most of the money you would invest in a full on race vehicle, yet not see the full off road potential because it still has to be street legal.

4BT Dakota 4x4 Crew Cab

The perfect truck for you. You can mod it by adding injectors and changing the governor spring.

I've got one for sale --- just lowered the price today to $12,500.

Dakota was first on my list as a great platform from which to start. I helped build a 2002 Dakota into a long travel pre-runner a few years ago in Utah. While the stock pumpkins were weak, there are so many bolt in parts on the market for it, that it's insane NOT to consider it. Even flared fenders are stocked by suppliers.

You'd want a gasser for that style of fun...the diesels aren't up for the higher revving of desert fun.

Like a race truck or a sand rail/buggy? Already had a buggy, but got bored with it rather quickly. Fast as hell, but only being 1 seat killed alot of the fun.

My Sierra has an Allison/Duramax, and is heavy. Yes, it is already lifted and has nice sand tires on it, but it not the soft/long travel that you really need to run out in the desert.

Prerunners, if done right, are still legal in CA! Would be a bit ackward to drive on the street, but they are still DD'able.
