Why steal things?

Sorry for spouting off here, but I'm pissed!! My wife and I started to go out to lunch today, only to find that someone had broken into the Tahoe and stole a few things. The leather stack handled Kabar my dad carried through Vietnam, my wife's iPod and our Garmin were taken.

I'm much less concerned about the electronics as I am about the knife...it's one of the only things I had left that dad gave me prior to passing away. Other items he gave me over the years was lost in the house fire in 2007.

I've called the cops, and gave them the information of what was stolen...and now I get to call the insurance company to let them know.

I hate thieves...I've worked my ass off for everything I own. I've worked jobs that normal people would have quit, so that I could put food on the table, a roof over the head, and clothes on the back of my family. Who in the hell do these people think they are?? Why steal from me?? Now I know what my dog was barking about last night around 2am...I looked outside, and couldn't see anything out of the normal, so I calmed him down and went back to bed.

Next time he barks, I'm opening the door and letting him attack whoever has entered my property uninvited.

Losing my dad's knife really bothers me...he entrusted it's care to me. He carried it through his time in Vietnam, and used it to kill 7 VC, and used it to protect my mom when she was being robbed in the 1970's...he sliced that punk across the chest while the guy was lifting the tire tool to beat my mom's head in. That knife helped bring him home, saved my mom's life, skinned the deer that he would bring home, and was used to butcher chickens when we lived on the farm.

It looked like this, without the shiny blade...the blade was darkened with use and age.

Vietnam-era Kabar knife and leather Kabar marked sheath in overall very good condition with #1207.

I too HATE thieves. They are too spineless to work, and take responsibility for their own lives. They are scurvy little spiders, strike that, spiders must do SOMETHING honorable. They should be shot in the act, except that would be too good for them. They were onto something in the days when they sentenced thieves to: "X years of hard labor."

We were burglarized almost 30 years ago, while we still lived in town. The saddest part was that they didn't get any of my stuff, guns, camera's, antique pocket watches etc. What they got were things that were sentimental belongings of my wife including a charm bracelet that her Dad had given her for her twelfth birthday, only a few months before his sudden death.

At the time of the burglary, my hunting and fishing buddy who lived across the street was an undercover cop. He told me that up until that time no one in Tarrant County, Texas had EVER been indicted for shooting someone in the act of stealing property. That's the way it should be, when a sleazoid like this is caught in the act, they should be just blown away on the spot and then make SURE that it is all over the news, so the next sleazoid would be able to think about it before putting his hands on the property of hard working people.

Cant say shooting is the answer ,you still have to be level headed enough to make the right decision ,a good hanging would work .I would start by looking at your local Pawn Shops first after your report to police ,if its something of personal value more than face value it could be the pawn shop operator will just hand it back to you if its in his store.

I truly feel as if I've been violated...this makes me sick.

Luckily my policy has a $100 deductible, but that knife is priceless to me. This is something that you can't put a dollar figure on...at least to me, I'm sure the insurance company will find a way to do it.

Thieves are thieves, some white collar some no collar. They both mooch off of others' success and won't do **** for themselves. On the flip side, greed, survival, and drugs drive people to some atrocious stuff. I keep all my doors locked all the time and when I buy a house it will have video surveillance with IR. If theft does happen, the perps will be on tape. My parents went through a similar experience JP, luckily most of the stuff stolen was costume jewelry and not worth anything. Perps did get caught and stuff recovered but the idiot PD took over 2 years to return it (case was swept under the door). Good luck, hope you at least get the knife back. Good advice with checking pawn shops.

I understand the feeling violated. When we were burglarized I remember lying in bed that night and thinking about some sorry, sleazoid, coward, no good ****er, too lazy to work for his own stuff has been in this room, STEALING stuff that WE worked for. It was a terrible feeling.

I find a lot of theft are done by opportunities. They do not size up the place before hand. They try to get in and out within a few minutes. Pre-mediated theft will not pick on small fry. Did you by chance leave the garage door open or side door unlock? I would look at the house again and see why they picked on you.

Sorry for the loss but $hit does happen.

My son reminded me that there's a neighbor up the road with cameras pointing in multiple directions. I just called him and he's sending me last night's footage.

Apparently there were about 6 other cars hit last night in the neighborhood, so the cops will be getting a copy of the footage as well.

Sorry to hear this, JP.

Luckily I was hit when I was pretty young and learned then and there that no matter where I'm parked, regardless of alarms, security, etc., I never leave anything visible in the car -- and regardless of visibility, I don't leave anything in it I can't "afford" to lose. The criminal element can show up anywhere, anytime.

I guess I understand in the abstract the concept of theft, it's taking something that doesn't belong to you so that you can either sell it or use it yourself. What I have never understood in any capacity is vandalism, like when people break windows or key cars, etc. It doesn't give them anything and simply destroys something for utterly no reason.

Be sure you watch craigslist in your area and fleabay as well; they may try to sell the knife, particularly. Too, if you can visit any swap meets in your area; be armed with a picture of your dad's knife so you can prove it if need be.

Good luck, man. I know how much it sucks.

He left some good stuff behind......

The knife obviously had great sentimental value. Since the theives are possibly local. Post notices on telephone poles that the knife stold has little if any monatary value and you would like the thieves to mail it back.

Even mention that it was a special gift from your deceased father. Most crooks have no concience but a few do. You cannot really leave visable items in cars almost anywhere with assurance theives will not break in to get what they see. I doubt the police fingerprinted any vehicle. This type of thing is usually very low on their priority list.

When I was in the Navy, I turned in one night & left my wallet in my dungarees hanging on the end of my rack. Gone the next morning. Stood in the middle of the berthing compartment and made an announcement to whoever took the wallet, I'd sure like in back. Got a call from the Master at Arms office later that day to come pick up my wallet. No money, but I was just glad to get my ID card and other stuff back. Losing your military ID card back then was a real azz ache.
