In state basketball rivalry

Tonight at 830 Purdue and IU play basketball here in West Lafayette. IU is ranked in the top ten but Purdue is gelling with a lot of young talented players who know no fear. It should be a great game. I especially treasure the fact that even though it is the biggest game of the year for most fans, the young men always play their hardest but there is never (almost never) any bad sportsmanship. The rivalry is one of playing their hardest but playing clean. (That does not mean there are no uncalled fouls) Many of the players are good friends across the divide and have played together and against each other since they were kids.

Yee haw!

Thanks for the reminder. I will have to try to tune in somewhere (probably internet radio).

It has been awhile since IU had anything to cheer about. I kinda miss the Bobby Knight days. Saw many exciting games in Assembly Hall when I was in grad school in Bloomington in '79-80.

It's a big deal in Indiana...

Classic case of "good vs. evil" The gallant, cream and crimson clad Crusaders going boldly forth into the den of iniquity to do battle with the wicked scum!

Errr, I don't suppose I need to say who I support?

The basketball is still first rate but its just not the intense experience since Bobby and Gene squared off!

Gene was the only coach in the country who had a winning record against Bobby.

Purdue is the only school with a winning record with IU. (I think).

Not to mention their contrasting "fashion" statements. I still get night sweats when I remember seeing those guys coaching their teams. Between Bobby in his flannel jacket and the checkered coats Gene used to wear....

In Gene's early years he had some wild stuff he wore. I remember seeing him around town in bright turquoise sports jackets and such. One day a sports writer made fun of his choices of clothing and soon he began appearing in gray suites and white shirts on the sidelines.

No matter how expensive the new suites were it did not prevent him from ripping off the jackets and flinging them to the side when a ref made a "bad" call.

He was all intensity on the floor but he cared about the players and was respectful to his assistants. When not in game face mode he also had a delightful sense of humor.

he used to come to our breakfast Optomist meetings each year to talk about the team. He was pretty candid since we never allowed any reporters at the meetings. He occasionally called players Knotheads at our meetings and speculated as to which planet they might be residing on in any particular game.

One game Bruce Weber his long time assistant (before becoming a head coach himself) got a little too involved in the sideline antics with the refs and got hit with a technical. When he appeared on the sidelines for the next game he found his chair had been equipped with a seat belt!

I think Matt Painter though is just as good a coach and is well respected and loved by pretty much everybody except the rival coaches!

When the daughter and I went to Dubai in 2011, I had a nice conversation with a young man who was about 6' 6 who was on our flight.

He played college ball somewhere (I don't remember where). His comment was that the state of Indiana has a reputation for producing players who know how to play the game. (Kindof like Texas's reputation with football players).

(His description of what he was going to Afganistan for made me think it was a CIA cover). He said his wife had a business over there teaching afgani women how to put on makeup. I cannot remember what he said he did.

That's so bad that even I , a Follicle Free-American, can make fun of it!

I'm always amazed by comb-overs. Who do they think they're fooling and how do they think it looks good?

He looks so much better on the St. John's sideline!

Who is that guy? I don't recognize him without the cheezy combover and shoe polish on the pate!

I love him though. great coach!
