RC throws Mahony under the bus

L.A. archbishop relieves retired cardinal of duties
Quote:
A first round of 14 priest files made public in Los Angeles nearly two weeks ago showed that Mahony and other top officials maneuvered behind the scenes to shield molester priests, provide damage control for the church and keep parishioners in the dark about sexual abuse in their parishes. Those documents, released as part of an unrelated civil lawsuit, were not redacted and provided a glimpse of what could be contained in the larger release.
When at least one of these SOB's actually serves jail time for conspiracy (I think that would apply right?) and accessory then may be they will have a little credibility. Until then, they are no better than the rest of the slimy pedophiles.

Exactly what I thought when I read that a couple of days ago. The Church knew all this stuff years ago yet only act on it when it becomes public. In this particular instance, since Mahoney deliberately sent priests to NM for counseling to avoid the reporting to police which was required in CA, I would think prosecution under organized crime statutes would be in order.

I tried to give you some time to post this but you dropped the ball again so I had to do your work for you again.... You need to step your game up.

I agree with the prosecution idea. I am tired of people like Mahoney getting a pass while children suffered at their hands with full knowledge of the hierarchy. On top of that they initiated a cover up and allowed even more children to be raped by these bastards. I say, prosecute and if found guilty, put the SOB's in general population and let them find out what it's like.

The other thing that confuses me is why this country is protecting these people. The parishioners seem to be accepting this. The fact that there are no protests and mass exodus from the RC is mind boggling.

For those who question why more people are not protesting in the ME (many many are) you may want to ask the same questions of any Roman Catholic you happen to meet. How can they support a criminal organization that preys on children and protects the rapists?

I apologize for falling down on my job. I am acquainted with a priest who left the church over this.

Yea, well... don't let it happen again.

Stepping down is not enough. It's a step in the right direction but voices need to be heard. They need to be yelling at the top of their lungs. Kids are being raped and no one seems to give a crap. This has been going on for 20-40 years that we know of (probably far far longer) and the church is still in business. WTF??????

Stepping down is a step in the right direction? Surely you jest. The leadership is rotten to the core all the way to the last and current pope. What is the firing of one low man on the totem pole supposed to do? I bust you for murder and you admit to running a red light. Seriously?

It was a step in the right direction for the priest who quit. He had some integrity.

Had he stepped down way back when, I might have agreed with you. Today, it is too little, too late. Once the thing blows up, your stepping down is little more than a lame attempt at an apology. IF he wants to apologize, do it the Hari Kiri way and I will say it is a sincere apology.

A show of integrity is confessing or stepping down when there is no hint of getting caught. Once it comes to light and the crap is about to hit the fan, confession or stepping down is merely an attempt to distance oneself from the issue or mitigate the ill feelings.

There was no indication in Kerry's post that the acquaintance was guilty of any crime. He was not at risk of being caught for anything. He was a priest in the RC. There was no indication in Kerry's post that he knew anything about what was going on with Mahoney or the Diocese. I do not see his stepping down as an apology for anything but as an acknowledgement that he was part of something (the RC) that lost it's way and was doing bad things. I believe you are condemning a man with out any evidence and no cause.

I believe he should be speaking out now if he is not and speaking loudly.

Seeing as how the RC church has been trying to play games from day 1 and the fact that Curry, who stepped down is a key aide to Mahoney, do you believe that he suddenly found out about it today or has knowledge about it previously? It's not like he is some low man on the totem pole priest. He was a key aide. All the way up to the pope, the church has been trying to bury this. When it fails, they try to declare bankruptcy so they can avoid paying for damages. Sorry but I am having a really hard time having the words "RC Church" and "Integrity" in the same sentence and have it sound favorable.

It's really hard to give that group the benefit of the doubt seeing their history. It would be easier to give YOU the benefit of the doubt if my wallet was missing right after you visited me than someone or some group with that track record.

Perhaps we are speaking of two different people. I was referring to the acquaintance of Kerry, not Curry or Mahoney.

I have more use for an automatic transmission than I do for the Catholic Church, or any other religion.

Yes, all Churches are exactly like the Catholic Church.

Parishioner makes a good point about denying Mass to the divorced while the Mass is served by criminals:

Consider also the fact that the parishioners who assumed their church collections were going for helping the poor and needy were actually going for multi-million dollar settlements because the Church didn't want the insurance companies to find out.

It's time to sweep all this clean.

This is what Martin Luther did in the Reformation
