Ok guys, I want a show car. Help me find one

I'm selling off a few of my toy cars and think I want a real show car. Ideally an all original survivor with the right patina or a lick-ably pristine car. I like driving my SL too much to take it to that level of obsessiveness, and its had lots of paintwork done over the years.

Budget is no more than 10k. I've been going to shows with the MBCA club for years along with other car shows entering random cars that gather little appreciation. Its time to end that.

I would not want a 126 or 116 unless it was a very unique euro with very low miles. I also don't think I'd want that new. I've always lusted after the 108s so that's my first thought. I don't want any of the older midsize models or diesels.

So keep an eye out for me. Post something you see that's interesting, and I'll post listings here for you guys to critique. Thanks.

ponton?

Would a Ponton interest you? There use to be one for sale in the Memphis market. The last time I heard, the price had come down some more. It was an Arizona car. I'm trying to remember --- maybe original paint?? don't remember.

You need to get into the box in order to think outside of the box

Spent many summer vacations touring though Europe in a Mercedes 309D camper van. If I remember correct the engine was between the two front seats, where I would sit facing backwards (safety was an unknown word than) and it was painfully slow.

But for a show car I would look for a W111 280SE, they are getting more expensive but with a little-bit of luck you can still find them for $15K.

JP was talking about having to sell his, I don't know if it's at show level or what it might need, or even what he might want, but I thought to mention it because he just posted recently about it.

Happy shopping.

I don't want another one unless you can find me a 450SLC 5.0 competition coupe.

I know who has one of those.

Barry Taylor, (above right) the now retired owner of AMG West, who I've known since 1985, has a nice, totally original and fully equipped one of them, stashed in his personal home's garage.

He calls it his "Mean Green Machine". I think it's a '79 or an '80 and I have no reason to doubt its authenticity or that he's moved it; it is his treasure.

Several years ago I got to go in there and see it, and it's a w123-type of thistle green one fully loaded with all the Monte Carlo rallye equipment on it.

I don't have a photo of it, but it is real, original and I have no doubt it's still parked in there.

300SEL 6.3 or 450SEL 6.9.

$10k isn't enough to get a really nice one of those though.

AMG C126's are pretty cheap now, I don't think they will be this cheap again. You can probably find with some hunting a super mint 560SEC 6.0 32 valve wide body AMG Hammer...but they go for $20k-$40k or more.

Rare yes, $100k car in 20 years, probably.

600's are also poised to really shoot up in value. More so if they had famous past owners.

600's only have one problem. It's not the cost of buying them, it's the cost of just keeping them going that gets people and that's without doing any restoration.

My favorite 600 related quote was, "it just needs the regular stuff, about $25,000"

They are expensive, but not horrendous.

That would likely win it's class since there are so few on this side of the Atlantic. A diesel version would be preferable. Though you wouldn't want to drive anywhere with one of those from central Kansas.
