Airport short truck

Does anyone know anything about these? I remember seeing them everywhere (airportwise) in the 80's. I always got a little bit of a laugh out of them. From time to time now I'll see one out on the street, I imagine the airlines sold them off.

Does anyone know what they're called? What they were used for? Why I want one? Anything about them?

Looks like an aircraft (or luggage cart) tug.

Looks like a Chevy with a 3" driveshaft and a Jeep wheelbase, a great combination for around town fun :)

The reason you want one is that you have not hippity hopped down the road in one. In its modifed state it is meant for driving about 15 miles an hour over a very smooth tarmac. It will probably be almost uncontrollable on the highway, if it is even legal for the highway.

I do agree that they have a certain eye appeal though.

Tugs

That looks like it would be pretty nifty! Would be awesome for moving trailers in tight spaces! :)

And BTW, I like option number 4 on the poll. I haven't had one of those, and wouldn't know where to even look for one!

New poll option: Because perpendicular parking a truck is boss.

There are normally several of these for sale during the month at Government Surplus Auctions at Government Liquidation. There are a few of then on there now; Dodge trucks with 6-cyl diesels.

They also have some aircraft for sale right now. Cargo planes and fighter jets that need to be cut up for scrap, but also some Cessna's and a Piper or two.

spdrun 02-07-2013 07:22 PM

I wonder how much the aircraft will go for (starting bid $150) and how much they can be re-sold for...

I was wondering the same about the military trucks. I know I've seen the site posted on here a number of times, anyone actually pulled the trigger on anything?

I've certainly seen them used for that, but there are dedicated tugs also. I've seen them used just as runabouts, and I want to say I've seen them with snowplow mounts as well. I'm just thinking that there must be a good reason to have them, something that justifies the added cost over a standard pickup.

I'm not sure how they're set up suspensionwise. I know the military had some that looked similar, but were unsprung, those I'm sure were a bit rough. There's one around the corner from me, and it appears to be sprung normally, but I haven't crawled underneath to be sure. It does have "special equipment" plates, so that might tell me something about licensing...

I'm sure I could find more about them, and even some for sale, probably even fanclubs, if I knew what they were called! Most of my searches reveal either normal (or otherwise airport specific) trucks, or the tractor type tugs. I'm not sure what these were called, or who made/modified them, so searching is getting me nowhere.

Also, that thing would be so neat for rallycross or something.

Some guys on Expedition Portal have bought trucks on there.

kerry 02-07-2013 08:11 PM

There's at least a couple of Unimogs on there now listed under Freightliner

Freightliner Corporation, FLU419, Front end loader and Backhoe Industrial Wheeled Tractor. The items serial number is 1F - Government Liquidation

Air&Road 02-07-2013 08:35 PM

The more I look at that truck I wonder how it could have room for rear suspension. It would not surprise me if the rear axle is mounted solid like a farm tractor. That would make for a hippity hop down the highway.
