The sidewalk in front of my town home is dark and its only because they didn't stick a lamp post in front of our house. Instead its diagonally across from us on a corner of a side street for other residents to get to their garages and no one ever walks on that sidewalk.

The area I live in boardered by 3 main streets and the Freeway.
On the one Main Street it is mosly industrial type Businesses with some Fast Food Places.
The other Main Street is small Businesses and had about 5 Bars at one time. The other Main street has a Grocery Store and other small Businesses.

I used to walk to some of the Bars and Walk back late at night on the Weekends and was never bothered by anyone. But, I stayed out of the Alleys and on the Main Streets. Also I am 6'1" tall and ethnically My area is mostly Asian and Hespanic with some Black Folks. So I am normally taller than the Folks I pass on the Street.

The one area were there is a bunch of Apartment Complexes used to be know to be a Hespanic Gang area. I have never tried taking a Walk through there at Night so I cannot comment on that.
I have walked through there during the day; most of the time I take the Main Street but no one has ever bothered Me.

Since that time Most of the Bars have been closed down and they Built a Police Station acrossed from one of the Gang Areas so I am guessing it is much safer now than it was in the past when I was walking around at night.

The area I live in is mosly a Blue Collar type area so I think most People have some member of ther Family providing Food and Shelter so there is not much motivation for someone to Rob someone who is walking.

There was a Lady Friend of mine who was helping someone move out of their Apartment on one of those main Streets and She set Her Purse down on the Ground go shove something in the Car and some one ran by and snatched the Purse and ran off.
2 weeks later the She found that they had mailed Her Purse back to here minus the Money and Her cosmetics???? Her Drivers Lic. and other personal stuff were all there!

ADDED: I did not read the Fist Post and thought this thread was about safety. I will give the local area I described above as a 95. Safe for Me and lots of small Businesses where you can buy what you want with in 1/4th of a Mile. Except for work you would not need a Car.

They list mine as car dependent. I agree. Though there are several supermarkets, eating places etc within a couple of miles and all on completely flat terrain. However. This is Phoenix. Nobody walks anywhere for most of the year. Everywhere here is car dependent.

Transition Towns might be interesting to anyone who likes this.

My score is in the mid thirties.

A couple things not accounted for are breathing exhaust fumes and growing own food. It is based on consumerism without wheels. Since we have our own water source and grow more than enough food to live a healthy life our need to walk to the store would be greatly reduced if we had no wheels.

that makes two of us, 74 as well.

I would have thought higher, im one block in from a street with about 15 eaterys, banks, shopping, and convenient bus stops. Interesting site, I wonder what the criteria is for how they arrive at the number.

52. Right smack in the middle of suburbia. Although they list a convenience store as the place to buy groceries when there is a grocery store 200 yards beyond that.

One important piece of information that it doesn't take into account, my commute.

Although that monthly cost is considerably less since I walk whenever it's not raining or sleeting or sub-zero.

Your score was reduced because you drive a 240D. They figured that the walking time and driving time was about the same.

Plus that, everyone knows 240D's get 95+ MPG's and last for 3 million miles so why walk?

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

This is why I don't care to have a higher score.

37. But I ride my bike around. There's nothing where I live. No good restaurants, no ethnic food, bad chinese food, a bar that smells like piss and a country club.

14. I'm surprised its that high since there is nothing within 3 miles of my neighborhood other than a school and the C&D canal.

Got a five here, there's nothing commercial within a mile and not even a shoulder on the road. Only about two miles to several stores in town though.
