its interesting the wrangling that goes on selecting jurors though. My friend was telling me about a jury duty deal she was ultimately not selected for, I guess it was a rape case. And things were getting pretty heated, the prosecution lawyer was looking for young women on the jury and older men who had daughters, and the defense was looking to put older women and young men she said. There apparently was quite a bit of horse trading going on, people dismissed, returned, dismissed, traded for other people, arguing going on between the lawyers, ect.
It had never occured to me just how much the makeup of a jury of your peers can really alter the outcome of the case, but sure, it definitely makes sense when you consider it. Im not sure how she learned what the case was actually supposed to be about, im assuming from some other jurors who got selected and told her later. (hopefully not during the proceedings) |

I was in a jury pool......got sent to a courtroom to answer questions for a lawsuit case. I was self employed at the time, but really under-employed because I didn't have any active projects.
I was past president of my area's small business association. I was also past president of my neighborhood association and very active in historic preservation. The case was some type of lawsuit.....anyway, one side asked me a bunch of questions about my involvement/leadership in my community. I got thrown off by the lawyers. So --- when are you going to start posting a bunch of worthless stuff???? |

Went til' 4:30 in the afternoon yesterday. The case was domestic violence, and the jury was 100% female. On the juror questionnaire, one of the questions was "Have you, your family, or close friends been arrested for any crimes? If so, elaborate." I summarized to the most recent stuff, and had a few things down... "DUI, reckless driving, speed in excess of 100, speed contest, street racing, and evasion of police..." One of the court clerks asked about this list, and commented "you should find a new group of friends!" LOL I got dismissed from that jury selection... |
Hmm. So this means your trouble with the law in regards to speeding and what not is a get out of Jury Duty free card for me, just because we're friends. Tuck that bit of info in my pocket for later ;)

In recent years I have always been way down the list and they never got to me. I have kind of wanted to be selected for a jury, so that I could do my civic duty. When I was very young I kind of pulled a prank to get off because I thought I was too buisy to take the time to serve on a jury. The prank was that I waited until one of the lawyers making the strikes was in earshot of me, and I leaned over to the person next to me and whispered "I hate lawyers." I was out of there in fifteen minutes. I am now ashamed that I did not do my civic duty and let them strike me or accept me fair and square. I was very young at the time. |

I felt the same way about getting out of jury duty.
I was always glad my number wasn't called, and when it was, I did everything I could to get dismissed for a hardship, or to get booted by the defense attorney. I finally was selected to serve on a murder trial about 2-3 years ago that lasted several weeks. It was a hardship to miss that much work, but it was a great experience and I'm glad I was able to fulfill my duty as a citizen. |

I've been summoned for Jury Duty next Friday. Not sure what they can possibly do at the end of a week?!!
Also, I'd be apprehensive about being prosecuted in court with a "jury of your peers"...individuals unfortunate enough to not find a way to get out of jury duty!? |
